Weekly Call To Action - October 2, 2022

10/2/2022

Quote of the Week:

One of the most vital ways we sustain ourselves is by building communities of resistance, places where we know we are not alone. — bell hooks

OI All Member Meeting:

What's Next for Reproductive Justice?
Thursday, October 6, 7:00 to 8:15 PM.

Picture

It's been 99 days since SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade, declaring that the constitutional right to abortion, upheld for nearly a half century, no longer exists.
In the wake of that decision, 14 states have enacted full bans on abortion, including, in some cases, no exceptions for rape or incest. In some states, doctors providing and individuals seeking such services face criminal charges.

About half of states are expected to enact bans on abortion or other gestational limits on the procedure. In some of these states, abortion remains legal for now as courts determine whether existing or new bans can take effect.

In the rest of the states, abortion is legal but may still be restricted, or access may otherwise be limited.
In the face of the grave danger now posed to millions of Americans who are either in need of or are providing safe abortion and reproductive health care.

Action: Attend Olympia Indivisible’s zoom event What's Next for Reproductive Justice? Thursday, October 6, 7:00 to 8:15 PM. The event is open to Indivisible members across Washington state as well as ally and partner organizations. Click HERE to register

Local Actions:

Comment on Thurston 2045 Comprehensive Plan

Picture

The Thurston Comprehensive Plan guides the growth of unincorporated Thurston County (areas outside of the cities). It details policies and goals for zoning and development regulations, and addresses requirements of Washington state's Growth Management Act.

Planners are referring to this Comprehensive Plan update project as Thurston 2045 because they are planning 20 years into the future, and the plan must be ready to implement by 2025.

The public needs to give staff specific guidelines for Climate Change and Housing that we want incorporated into the Comprehensive Plan update.

Action: Send separate comments on each topic area. Take this one click action in Take Action Network (TAN) Comment on Thurston 2045 Comprehensive Plan Update.

Federal Actions:

Support the Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act of 2022

Picture

Representative Pramila Jayapal and Senator Elizabeth Warren have introduced H.R.7706 and S.4177 respectively. The Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act of 2022 calls for more disclosure, a binding code of conduct for the Supreme Court and a new judicial recusal process.

The Supreme Court is the only court in the country that is not required to abide by a judicial code of ethics.

Background
With high court in spotlight, Democrats push judicial ethics overhaul

Action: Contact your Members of Congress

Option A: Take this one click action in Take Action Network (TAN) Support the Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act of 2022

Option B: Contact your Members of Congress
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: I urge you to cosponsor the Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act of 2022 introduced by Pramila Jayapal and Elizabeth Warren. Please do everything you can to get this bill passed. We have judges sitting on the Supreme Court that are not voluntarily policing themselves. We must enforce rules so that judges must recuse themselves when there is a conflict of interest. Court integrity is a high priority for me.

Sincerely,
[NAME] from [CITY, ZIP]

Drinks and Democracy Saying Goodbye for the Winter
OI-Co-Founder Lisa Ornstein invited Olympia Indivisible members to her cozy back patio in SE Olympia for a Drinks and Democracy Happy Hour every Saturday during the Summer to enjoy a signature house drink on a democratic theme. Now that the days are getting darker earlier and earlier, sitting on the patio in the dusk and cold will be a whole lot less fun. We’ll do this again next Summer! And who knows? Maybe there will be some hot toddies in the living room later this Fall. Stay tuned!
