Weekly Call To Action - June 26, 2022

6/26/2022

Quote of the Week:

The Supreme Court does not exist above the constitutional system. It can shape the constitutional order, it can say what the Constitution means, but it cannot shield itself from the power of the other branches. The Supreme Court can be checked and the Supreme Court can be balanced. – Jamelle Bouie, New York Times

Looking Forward:

This week we are still in shock and dismayed about awakening to our loss of liberties and reproductive rights. This is just the beginning. Below are three actions reaching out to our Members of Congress and our President to halt this destruction of democracy. Next week, we will be reaching out to you with a clarion call to activism. What can you do to make a difference!

Take Three Actions Now:

Our Response to This Radical Supreme Court Must Be Immediate and Forceful

Picture

The stunning decision this week by the radical conservative majority of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe and allow states to control women’s reproductive health decisions shows us who they really are. Last week’s wrongly decided rulings on abortion rights and gun control are just the beginning unless we act. We are not powerless in this moment.

Congress and voters have the power to change the court and the law. What we don’t have is the political will. Yet.

Action 1: Contact your senators to remove the filibuster, expand the court and establish term limits.

Option A: Take this action with one click in Take Action Network (TAN) Our Response to This Radical Supreme Court Must be Immediate and Forceful

Option B: Contact your Senators
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form

Script: My name is________ and I am calling from zip code____as a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am absolutely outraged that the radical conservatives on the Supreme Court have taken away women’s reproductive rights. They have signaled that they will take away other rights. This cannot stand.

Senate Democrats must act now to remove the filibuster, expand the court and establish term limits. They have the power to do it, all they need is the political will.

I am going to do everything in my power to bring more voters to our cause and push back against this radical, out of control Supreme Court. I ask that you do the same.

There Is a Clear and Present Danger to Democracy

Picture

We need to take action now to ensure safe elections. See what former justice John Luttig has to say. His thinking is clear on what is not right about the current GOP leadership.

John Michael Luttig is a conservative former judge who clerked for Judge Antonin Scalia. He worked in the DOJ under George H. W. Bush and assisted Supreme Court nominees David Souter and Clarence Thomas with their Senate confirmation.

  • Read Luttig’s CNN Oped: “The Republican blueprint to steal the 2024 election”
  • Read: Cardin, Klobuchar Reintroduce Legislation to Prohibit Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation

Action 2: Contact your Members of Congress to ensure safe elections.

Option A: Take this action with one click in Take Action Network (TAN) Act Now: Clear and Present Danger to Democracy

Option B: Contact your MOCs

  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: According to former Judge John Luttig, the Trump allies plan to steal the 2024 election by exploiting the Electors and Elections Clauses of the Constitution and using a sympathetic Supreme Court.

To ensure safe elections, I am asking you to:
  • Push congress to amend the Electoral Count Act to constrain Congress’ own power to reject state electoral votes and decide the presidency.
  • Pass S. 1840 - Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act of 2021
  • Expand the Supreme Court to 13 Justices

Ask Biden to Provide Abortion Services in Federal Facilities

Picture

“Elizabeth Warren, alongside Washington Democrat Patty Murray, sent a letter to Biden last week suggesting a host of executive actions the administration could pursue to protect abortion rights. A total of 25 Democrats — half their Senate ranks — signed the letter, which called on the president to direct federal agencies to “develop a national plan to defend Americans’ fundamental reproductive rights, including their right to an abortion.”

Background:
  • Medication abortion and clinics on federal land: Here are Democrats' ideas to protect abortion access
Action 3: Contact President Biden and ask him to protect abortion access by providing medication abortion and clinics at federal facilities.

Option A: Take this action with one click in Take Action Network (TAN) Ask Biden to Provide Abortion Services in Federal Facilities

Option B: Contact President Biden at 202-456-1111 Tues-Thurs, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM or Contact Us | The White House

Feel free to personalize your message.

Script: I am asking President Biden to use his executive powers to provide medication abortion and abortion clinics at federal facilities. He could also provide vouchers for people who will have to travel out of state for abortions and use the 2023 budget to repeal the Hyde amendment. Women will die because of the recent SCOTUS ruling. Please help us!

Sincerely,

Your Work Pays Off:

Thank Thurston Commissioners for Working to Save Legacy Forests

Picture

Background:
  • Thurston County commissioners now oppose DNR timber cuts across the county, letter says
  • Save Washington’s legacy forests to save ourselves

On June 16, the county commissioners wrote the DNR board and Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz to ask that they consider saving 3,100 acres of forest in Thurston County. This move would protect what they and other advocacy groups believe to be the last of the county’s Legacy Forests, which are scheduled to be cut by 2026.

Please take the time to personalize the script.

Action: Thank the Thurston Board of County Commissioners

Option A: Take this action with one click in Take Action Network (TAN) Thank Thurston Commissioners for Working to Save Legacy Forests

Option B: Contact the BoCC - county.commissioners@co.thurston.wa.us

Subject: Thank you for working to save legacy forests

Script: Dear Commissioners,

Thank you for your letter to DNR to save the last of the county’s Legacy Forests. Preserving legacy forests is a top priority for me. As stated in The Seattle Times, legacy forests are lifeboats for biodiversity and they sequester carbon at remarkable rates.

I appreciate your attention to the importance of saving our trees.

Sincerely,

[Name] from [CITY, ZIP]
