Quote of the Week:“The first rule is to keep an untroubled spirit. The second is to look things in the face and know them for what they are.” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations OI Special Events:We’re On Our Way with More Ice CreamPhoto Source: Canva We had such a good time meeting everyone at our last Ice Cream Social that we want to do it again. This time we are heading for Harbor House on Percival Landing where you can walk the Boardwalk with a wonderful water view of Budd Inlet, and then have ice cream with us. Or, it might be a good day to check out Farmer’s Market, and then come to us for an ice cream treat and good conversation. Maybe you are in the area for one of the many wonderful restaurants within walking distance of Harbor House. Or one of the art galleries downtown; Child’s End is a local favorite. Or shopping at our unique downtown shops. Whatever you are doing, Olympia Indivisible invites all OI members and their little ones to an Ice Cream Social on Sunday, June 9, from 2:00 to 4:00, at Harbor House on Percival Landing. We would love to see you, so please show up for an ice cream cone! We’ll have delicious, locally-made ice cream AND sorbet for lactose intolerant folks, in cones or cups (for the gluten-free crowd).

Dates are from Aug 30 to Sept 22, 2024. Federal Actions:Ban Burning/Detonation of Hazardous WastesSource: Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, Indiana From our friends at Earthjustice For decades, military bases and private facilities across the country have relied on a practice known as open burn / open detonation (OB/OD) to destroy excess, unserviceable, or obsolete military munitions, including small arms cartridges, rockets, mortars, and missiles, and other toxic wastes. Open burn and open detonation harm the environment and human health as these practices result in the uncontrolled release of toxic constituents into the air, soil, and water. Even though the Environmental Protection Agency prohibited the use of OB/OD in 1980, the agency also created a giant loophole to allow facilities to continue using OB/OD for explosive wastes, claiming there were no alternatives at the time. And while EPA has since identified numerous alternatives for these hazardous wastes, it continues to allow the archaic and harmful practice of OB/OD to continue. Now, EPA has released long-overdue proposed revisions to OB/OD regulations and is currently accepting comments on the proposed rule. It’s critical that we tell the EPA to ban OB/OD now. Action: Tell EPA it’s time to protect frontline communities from toxic threats posed by OB/OD and demand that the agency finally put an end to this archaic practice. Local Actions:Let’s All Walk with Erin: A United Stand Against HateFrom our friends at League of Women Voters Thurston County You may have heard about a very disturbing incident which occurred on the May 4, “Walk with Erin Jones,” when a vehicle drove by with someone screaming the n-word. Here’s community educator Erin's TikTok video reporting this event. It’s an effort similar to what happened in March when Lacey’s Commission on Equity was zoom-bombed with racist, anti-semitic and anti-DEI language … to keep people who have been historically marginalized afraid and invisible. The League of Women Voters Thurston County hopes that each of us will take these incidents as an opportunity to galvanize the Tumwater and Thurston County community to demonstrate unity in the community by turning out on June 8th and “Walk with Erin.” Action: Show up and let’s walk together! Saturday, June 8th, 11am-1pm, at the ASSHO Center, 5757 Littlerock Rd., Tumwater. ___________________ Action Cafe 2024, The Cafe is taking a break for the Memorial Day Holiday. Our intrepid leader will be back on Monday, June 3 Action: Register HERE for June 3 or later. We will send you a Zoom link and tomorrow morning, Chef Lisa will send your "menu." |
