Weekly Call To Action - July 31, 2022

7/31/2022

Quote of the Week:

“Currently, MAGA Republican candidates in two of our neighboring Legislative Districts have outraised all pro-democracy candidates in campaign funding. Senate Majority Whip and Democratic incumbent Emily Randall in LD26 and Julianne Gale in LD35 have both been outraised, and Randall’s opponent Jesse Young opposes abortion (including in cases of rape and incest), yet votes against reducing prenatal exposure to pesticides.

Let’s stand up, push back, do our part.” – Lisa Ornstein, Co-Founder, Olympia Indivisible

Local Actions:

Salmon/Orca Recovery; Snake River Dams

Picture

Thanks to OI members for the work you have done supporting salmon and orca recovery by advocating that the lower Snake River dams be breached. The public comment period on the draft report going to Governor Inslee and Senator Murray ended July 12 and we anticipate the report will be finalized in early August.

Another important action concerns the recent NOAA draft report, Rebuilding Interior Columbia Basin Salmon and Steelhead. The draft report states on page 12 “For Snake River stocks, it is essential that the lower Snake River be restored via dam breaching”. Since this is a draft report, the concern is that pro-dam factions and lobbyists will work to have this science-based language removed, indeed, that has happened in past reports.

Action: Prior to August 10 let the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Council for Environment Quality, Senator Murray and Governor Inslee know that the recommendations in the draft report must not be eliminated or lessened in the final version. Dam Truth has prepared one click comments at this link (use their suggested script or provide your own):
Act Now—Don’t Let Pro-Dam Interests Strip Immediate Snake River Dam Breaching from NOAA Report

Thank The Olympian’s Rolf Boone for Excellent Reporting

Picture
Rolf Boone, reporter for the Olympian. Photo from the Olympian.
Rolf Boone, business writer for The Olympian, reported on July 12 about the unsustainable work environment that employees at the Port of Olympia are facing under the toxic leadership of their supervisor, Executive Director Sam Gibboney.

On July 29, Boone wrote a follow-up article that revealed the exodus of employees from the Port due to Gibboney’s management style has cost Thurston County taxpayers nearly $150,000 for separation agreements binding these employees to non-disclosure about their employer.

Boone has been doing an outstanding job both as a reporter and as an investigative journalist. His good work deserves our support, appreciation and acknowledgment.

Action: Please write, tweet or call Rolf Boone to thank him for his excellent reporting,

Rolf Boone rboone@theolympian.com

Script: Thank you for your excellent on-going reporting about the abuse of Port employees by Executive Director Sam Gibboney and the cost to Thurston County taxpayers resulting from failure of the Port Commission to protect their employees from a toxic work environment. I deeply appreciate your thorough journalism on this issue.

Reporting of this quality on local issues is a primary reason that I subscribe to The Olympian.

Federal Actions:

Support Term Limits for SCOTUS

Picture

Rep. Hank Johnson and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse have introduced a bill for term limits for SCOTUS: the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act, which would establish term limits for Supreme Court justices while preserving constitutional protections for judicial independence in decision making.

Under the TERM Act, a new justice would take the bench every two years and spend 18 years in active service.

Background
  • Democrats introduce bill limiting Supreme Court terms amid calls for reform
  • Democrats Introduce Bill That Would Immediately Kick Clarence Thomas Off Of The Supreme Court

Action: Contact our MOC’s to support term limits.

Option A: Take this copy/paste action in Take Action Network (TAN) Support Term Limits for SCOTUS

Option B: Contact your Congressperson.

  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: I am asking my Senators and Representative Strickland to cosponsor the new bill that Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Representative Hank Johnson have introduced called the 'Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act'.

Under the TERM Act, a new justice would take the bench every two years and spend 18 years in active service.

Please support Term Limits for SCOTUS. We must restore confidence in the Court!

Sincerely,

Tell OSHA to Pass Emergency Heat Regulations

Picture

Farm workers are up to 35 times more likely to die from heat than those in any other civilian occupation, and climate change is worsening these conditions. Only California, Oregon, and Washington have heat protections in place. This lack of regulations forces farm workers to choose between their income and their health.
Sign: The United Farm Workers petition telling OSHA to pass emergency heat regulations (uncheck “I want UFW email alerts” to avoid being added to the UFW mailing list).

Upcoming Events:

Saturday, August 27 from 11am - 1pm at ORLA
SAVE THE DATE!!! The Annual Olympia Indivisible Picnic is Back!

Mark your calendar, dust off your picnic basket, and get ready for a fun, family-friendly outdoor event with good COVID protocols in place to keep us safe and the picnic shed to keep us shady. We’ll be back with more information and registration links next week.
