Read on for details. Debates for U.S. Senate, House, Secretary of State Races The debates will be broadcast by multiple media outlets and will be produced by TVW, the state’s public-affairs network. Details about debate moderators, media panelists and how to submit questions for candidates will be announced in the coming weeks.
Local Actions:Ask OlyFed to Be Forthright about Not Funding Fake Abortion Clinic Donations Across the United States you will find “crisis pregnancy centers” (also called “CPCs'' or “fake clinics”). These clinics or mobile vans mascarade as health centers, but they have a shady, harmful agenda: to prevent people from making informed choices about their reproductive and sexual health. CPCs target vulnerable patients with misleading advertisements and medically inaccurate information and then scare, shame patients out of getting an abortion. You can read more about fake “abortion clinics” in Washington in Shaun Dobbins June 21 article in The Olympian. One such fake clinic here in Olympia is the Options Pregnancy Center on Lilly Rd. Olympia Federal Savings Bank has been a trusted institution in our community since 1906 and contributes 10 to 15% of profits annually to local charitable endeavors. Unfortunately, that has included donations to Options Pregnancy Clinic. In private correspondence with a local business this summer, Olympia Federal Savings Bank both acknowledged that they had contributed to Options Pregnancy and committed to making no further such donations in the future. However, OlyFed has yet to go public with this commitment. Such a statement is necessary on two scores:
Olympia Indivisible’s Reproductive Justice Liaison, who is also a long-time OlyFed member, has repeatedly emailed Olympia Federal Savings asking them to make a public statement that they will not contribute to Options, but to date, her requests have gone unanswered. Action: Ask Olympia Federal Savings Bank CEO Josh Deck to go public with OlyFed’s commitment to no longer make donations to Options Pregnancy Clinic.
Script: Dear Mr. Deck, It has come to my attention that Olympia Federal Savings Bank recently committed to making no further donations to Options Pregnancy Clinic. As a citizen of Thurston County, I commend OlyFed for taking this step. Fake clinics such as Options Pregnancy Clinic prevent people from making informed choices about their reproductive and sexual health and are unworthy of community support. I ask that Olympia Federal Savings Bank make public its decision to make no further donations to options Pregnancy Clinic. Going on record will not only demonstrate your commitment to community accountability but will also strengthen your record of community leadership. State Actions:Thank Bob Ferguson for Supporting Local Journalism Local, professional journalism is essential to democracy. It can hold local officials accountable, expose corruption and inform the community in ways that national media will never be able to do. When done well, local media invites civic interaction in healthy, ongoing ways. The absence of local media invites extremism and corruption. Our Attorney General Bob Ferguson is working to support local journalism by working to extend tax breaks that can help local media companies survive. Let's thank him and urge our state representatives to pass his bill.
