Environment

Ask for a floor vote for Orca vessel protection
DEADLINE: Mar 8 11:00pm
The House companion for SB 5371 has "died." We now have only the Senate version and it needs to be pulled from Rules to a floor vote by March 8th in order to survive. Please take action now!

Support HB 1131 - Shift recycling costs away from ratepayers (House Rules)
DEADLINE: Mar 8 5:00pm
Shift recycling costs away from ratepayers and onto the manufacturers. HB 1131 is also called the WRAP Act.

Support HB 1185 Reducing environmental impacts associated with lighting products (House Rules)
DEADLINE: Mar 8 5:00pm
Broken mercury lights (fluorescent) release toxic mercury to the air, which accumulates in the environment. This bill addresses a phase out of mercury light bulbs and an update of the existing light-cycle law.

Support HB 1282 - Build with low-carbon materials (House Rules)
DEADLINE: Mar 8 5:00pm
Build with low-carbon materials and create good family-wage jobs.

Healthcare

Support SB 5241 (Keep Our Care Act) by Urging Legislators to Pass it out of Rules for a Floor Vote
DEADLINE: Mar 8 4:00pm
SB 5241 addresses hospital mergers and consolidation of health care services that has led to half of the state’s hospital beds to be religiously affiliated. Catholic health institutions prohibit certain kinds of care, such as medical aid in dying, abortion care, and more.

Support WA state health providers of reproductive health care and gender-affirming treatments
DEADLINE: Mar 3 11:00pm
Lobby your legislators to pass HB 1340. Don't let out-of-state lawmakers take away the license of WA state providers of reproductive care and gender-affirming treatments.

Law & Justice

Prevent Robocalls & telephone scams: Support HB 1051
DEADLINE: Mar 3 11:00pm
Please help prevent Robocalls & telephone scams (HB 1051) by lobbying the state legislature. Robocallers and scammers are preying on our elders, youth, and other vulnerable populations. Give AG Bob Ferguson the tools he needs to crack down on these abusers!

New TAN Training

A star shape that is blue on the left and red on the right

The legislative session is nearly half over and so far Washington Indivisible members reported using Take Action Network (TAN) to take 11,922 Actions. But with more people using TAN we can have an even bigger impact!

Are YOUR Legislators Hearing From YOU? To get jump-started on using TAN, Kevin StJohn Leja has volunteered to provide training. This is a basic training that gets you up to speed quickly.

When is the best time for this training? NOW - during the legislative session (before it’s over!). Contact Kevin using the TAN Training Google form soon to schedule a training.

Consider Running for Port Commissioner - The Environment Needs You!

The Marine Terminal at the Port of Olympia
The Marine Terminal at the Port of Olympia is a serious polluter and incurs huge financial losses each year as the public subsidizes a private corporation’s log shipping business.
If you are concerned about protecting our environment and good governance that benefits all the people of Thurston County, consider running for Port Commissioner this year. There are 3 Port Commission positions up for election. If you live in district 1, 4, or 5 and are eligible to vote, you qualify as a candidate for Port Commissioner (see the new district map below).

The Port of Olympia Action Team (POAT) of OI is actively seeking to recruit and support candidates for Port Commissioner who will promote the core values of Olympia Indivisible. We believe the Port of Olympia needs a course correction, and business as usual is not sustainable nor does it equitably benefit citizens of Thurston County who contribute over $7 million in taxes to the Port each year.

Action: If you might consider running for Port Commissioner, please contact us as soon as possible at portforthepeople@gmail.com.
We are happy to answer your questions with regards to the responsibilities, compensation, and time commitment of Port Commissioners.

New Chair of the Washington State Democratic Party

 Shasti Conrad WA Democratic Chair

Washington Indivisible Podcast invites you to meet Shasti Conrad in her new capacity as chair of the Washington State Democratic Party! Longtime listeners will know her as the former chair of the King County Democrats (and de facto co-host on our podcast--she's a frequent guest and fabulous fill-in host).

In this wide-ranging discussion, we hear about her thoughts on her transformational role as the youngest person to ever be elected chair, as well as being the first woman of color in the position. We also discuss the work ahead for the 2023 and 2024 election cycles, and most importantly, we talk about how Shasti and the WA Dems will be actively listening to and working with grassroots groups like Indivisible.

Take Action to Save Mature Forests

Person hugging an old growth tree

This action is from our friends at Thurston Climate Action Team (TCAT).

We are undertaking a campaign to stop the timber sale on public lands of old healthy forests. Starting in May of 2022 Dept of Natural Resources (DNR) started selling off old mature forests. This is a crucial time for us to protect the last 5% of these older forests remaining in Western Washington. Just in the first few months in 2023 four Capitol forest parcels are being sold among many others. We depend upon legacy forests in combating climate change through carbon storage. These cuts set back our local and state emission reduction goals by decades. These trees are quite literally the lungs of Western Washington!

This month we are specifically urging Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz to pull a parcel known as “Juneau” from the March timber auction, as it is full of older trees and is a healthy bio-diverse forest.

Action 1: Attend the Feb. 28 hybrid event

When: Tues Feb. 28th at 6:00pm
Where: 1223 Bethel St. NE Olympia and On Zoom

Join us for an art and letter writing party. Or join Zoom at this link. We are hoping to fill Franz’s inbox and mailbox with heartfelt letters and artwork similar to the positive impact of The Chrysalis Project in 2020.

Action 2: Attend the DNR hearing on March 7

When: March 7th at 8:45am
Where: 1111 Washington St. SE Olympia.

Join us for in-person action at the DNR hearing. Come wearing all black and we’ll bring the bright yellow caution tape arm bands.

Fill out this form to stay in touch about the action and to be notified when the testimony link goes live, and to get support around crafting your 2 minute testimony. We encourage you all to come regardless whether you testify or not, although the more testimonies the better!

Your Work Pays Off:

Housing Bill HB 1110 continues on!

An attractive duplex building

A bill sponsored by LD22 Representative Jessica Batemant, that would legalize duplexes and fourplexes in most neighborhoods in nearly every Washington city has cleared another committee in the state Legislature.

House Bill 1110 passed the House Appropriations Committee on Friday (2/24/2023) with a bipartisan 25-5 vote. It even made national news!
