Weekly Call To Action - January 1, 2023

12/31/2022

Quote of the Week:

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” — Arthur Ashe

Welcome to 2023 Olympia Indivisiblers:

This month marks OI’s sixth anniversary as a 100% volunteer-run, pro-democracy group of civically engaged citizens in Congressional District 10. From the 34 folks who gathered in Carla’s living room in January 2017, we’ve grown to be a determined, resilient, spirited group of action makers and action takers, standing up for progressive causes, policies, and candidates.

2023 will be all about building our capacity as we focus on legislative advocacy, elections, issues – and lay groundwork for November 2024. Check out next week’s Call to Action for suggestions on how you can help us get there!

January 6th: Insurrection Remembrance
and
Pro-Democracy, Progressive Activism for 2023

The date Friday, Jan. 6, 2023 on the American Flag with the time of 5 to 6 pm.
On Friday, January 6, 2023, from 5-6pm, join Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Washington Deputy Majority Leader Senator Manka Dhingra, and Indivisible members and allies across the state for an uplifting, action-focused January 6th commemorative Zoom event. Here's what to expect:

  • a remembrance of the 2021 insurrection

  • an introduction by Congresswoman Jayapal and Senator Dhingra to the 2023 federal Congressional and Washington Legislative landscapes: the balance of power at play, priorities of progressive, pro-democracy members, what will and won't be possible in 2023, and how we can support pro-democracy, progressive initiatives.

  • And because we're all about action, information about two pro-democracy power tools for the 2023 Congressional and WA Legislative sessions: Indivisible Truth Brigade and Take Action Network

Legislative Actions:

How You Can Participate in Actions in 2023

Take Action Network logo plus the words Olympia Indivisible imposed on the American flag and the outline of Washington State with Washington Legislative Action (WILA) set inside the state.

Washington State Legislation officially starts on Monday, January 9, although some bills have already been prefiled.

You can follow bills on your own at Legislature Home (wa.gov).

But a far easier and more effective way of participating in legislative advocacy this year is to become a Take Action Network (TAN) user. As a TAN user, you will receive notifications and one-click responses when your weigh-in will make a difference. TAN makes taking action (contacting your legislators, committee members, or sending a “pro or con” directly to the legislature) fast and easy.

Here is some information on TAN
  • Take Action Network - Introduction (11 slides)
How to sign up, get trained, and have your questions answered
  • Getting help is easy! Send a question using the Take Action Network (TAN) Help Form.

We often use TAN Actions as options in our CTA’s, so you might already be somewhat familiar. You might have used TAN, but need a refresher to get started. We highly (highly, highly!!!) recommend using this system.

WA State Actions:

Support Rail Improvements

Start the new year by being in community, in silence, while stepping towards and re-pledging allegiance towards both inner and outer peace.

WA Youth Climate and Conservation Summit

Friday, January 13th 10am-1pm | Marathon Park Olympia

Statewide Climate X Conservation March on Olympia Fri. Jan 13, 10 am -1 pm. Marathon Park to State Capital

Northwest salmon and orca conservation is intrinsically tied to a need for increased prioritization of renewable energy investments in the Columbia Basin. With youth and supporters from around the state, from Bellingham to Walla Walla, we intend to kick off the 2023 Washington legislative session with the message that climate investments in the Columbia Basin are a statewide priority, to prevent salmon and orca extinction via Snake River dam replacement, uphold Columbia Basin Indigenous sovereignty, and protect the right to an ecologically-sound future for all Washington youth.

The event, from 10am to 1pm on Friday, January 13th, will consist of a youth-led rally with speakers at Marathon Park, Olympia, followed by an impassioned march to the State Capitol Building, where closing speeches will be given and a high-visibility demonstration (TBD) will be held.

10:00 - 10:45: Speeches
10:45 - 12:00: March to the Capitol
12:00 - 1:00: Final speeches and photo ops
