Weekly Call To Action - November 13, 2022

11/13/2022

Quote of the Week:

“President Biden presided over the best midterm elections for the party in the White House in 20 years — despite Washington insiders predicting that Democrats would be wiped out.

Donald Trump did his party no favors with his preening and support for downright awful candidates who lost. Nevertheless, this electoral success belongs to Mr. Biden, who ignored ivory-tower economists and out-of-touch pundits claiming that bold action to help families was bad politics. Instead, Mr. Biden delivered significant economic progress for working people.”
–Elizabeth Warren, New York Times, Nov. 13, 2022

OI Member Event, Celebration

An Invitation to ALL OI Members: Let's Brunch Together! Saturday, Nov. 19, 11:00 am, at Equal Latin Restaurant!

Picture

Sign up to attend, mark your calendar and come join OI members and leaders for an 11:00 am brunch on Saturday, November 19th at Equal Latin Restaurant (520 4th Ave. E). Here's your chance to be with your OI family and eat, chat, laugh, and enjoy each other's company — no speeches (maybe a toast with a Mimosa in hand), just fellowship and good food.

This is a pay-on-your-own event. We're limiting seating to 40 in order to keep everyone healthy—and for the same reasons, we're asking everyone to be fully vaxxed, masked, and take a COVID home test before you head on over.

Register here.

Upcoming Events to Support Pro-Democracy Candidates

We still need to Cure Ballots in Arizona and Washington!

Arizona Statewide
The governor and attorney general races are neck and neck, and the Democrats have real shots to win the AZ-1 and AZ- 6 House districts, which would be monumental to the Dems possibly holding the US House majority. The phone bank can be done in either English or Spanish; they will ask you when you show up. Register ahead of time and then show up when it's your slot.

Washington CD-03
Marie Glusenkamp Pérez has been declared victorious as CD-03’s new Congressional Representative. Unfortunately, MAGA extremist Joe Kent has thus far refused to concede, so Marie’s campaign is asking for help to cure ballots and increase her lead.

And we also need to help Senator Raphael Warnock win his runoff election!
We have a chance to help increase the Senate pro-democracy majority: the Georgia race for Senator Raphael Warnock is in a run-off against MAGA extremist Herschel Walker on December 6th. We have three weeks to help make a difference. Let’s do this!

Volunteer to call/text voters!
Just like we did in 2020, Indivisibles on the ground and virtually across the country will be mobilizing voters for the December 6 runoff election. Fill out your information and Indivisible National will send you everything you need to help re-elect Senator Warnock. Sign up to volunteer to contact voters in Georgia.

Write letters to Georgia voters with Lisa this coming Thursday! Olympia Indivisible has “adopted'' 160 Georgia voters via votefwd.org . We’ve got everything we need except…writers!

If you’re ready to write 10 letters to under-represented Georgia voters (who are, BTW, very, very likely to support Raphael Warnock), and are free this coming Thursday from 10-11:30am, Olympia Indivisible co-founder Lisa O. is hosting a Letter-Writing Party at her home. Participants must be up to date on COVID boosters and wear masks. Lisa will ensure safe distancing and run an air purifier in addition to MERV-13 HVAC.

PLEASE do NOT show up without registering—we are limiting this event to 10 participants in order to be COVID safety-forward. All you need to do is to send an email to olympia.indivisible@gmail.com. Lisa will have letter forms, envelopes, stamps, and coffee, tea, and cake!

What: GOTV to Georgia voters for the Warnock runoff
When: Thursday, Nov. 17 from 10-11:30am
Where: Home of co-founder Lisa O. in SE Olympia
How To Register: send email to to olympia.indivisible@gmail.com

Meeting to Stop Olympia Airport Growth

Picture

You may have heard about the State proposing a Mega Airport for East Olympia, but there is more than one airport threat facing us in Thurston County. The Port of Olympia has ongoing capacity-enhancing projects at the Olympia Regional Airport. A public meeting will explain what is proposed for the Olympia Airport “reconfiguration” which could increase the airport’s capacity for commercial flights. Problems we could face with an increase in commercial flights include:
  • Pollution – noise, air and water
  • Health impacts – studies show serious impacts in wide radius of airport
  • Property values plummet because of above
  • No local control over increase of flights
  • Climate change
  • More warehouses fewer trees – domino effect
  • No Environmental Impact Statement has been done
  • Wildlife impacts
  • Unproven technologies promised
  • No chance to say no later
  • Benefits multinational corporations not Thurston residents

Port Commissioners will vote in the near future on this issue.

Action: Attend a public meeting to learn more about what’s at stake for all of us and what you can do to help.
When: Tuesday, November 15 - 7:00 p.m.
Where: Olympia Center - Multipurpose Room A, 222 Columbia St NE, Olympia
Good Covid protocols will be observed. Masks are required to protect the most vulnerable. Chairs will be spaced far apart in the room.

Action: Sign the petition: Stop Olympia Airport Growth

Unfox My Cable

“Fox News makes $1.8 billion from the carriage fees it charges cable TV providers to include the channel in increasingly expensive cable TV bundles…But just 3 million watch. 87 million Americans pay their cable company for and thus subsidize Fox News.”

Action: Send a message to your cable company using: Unfox My Cable Box campaign. When you start to type in the slot for the cable company there is a dropdown of names, such as: XFINITY (Comcast).

Support Local Unions

Picture
The right to unionize and fair labor practices are Olympia Indivisible core values.

Action: Let’s walk the walk by showing up at the Starbucks at 5300 Capitol Blvd, Tumwater this THURSDAY, Nov. 17th, from 12-3pm. Wear some holiday cheery colors or your favorite Santa/reindeer/elf hat, bring a sign (e.g., “Olympia Indivisible supports Starbucks Workers United”), dress warmly, and let’s do this!

Federal Actions:

Keep Congress in Session

Picture

In the event that Democrats lose their trifecta, we know that MAGA Republicans will not only refuse to cooperate to pass substantive legislation, but also actively obstruct basic legislative necessities in order to hurt Democrats and everyday people, such as slashing Social Security and Medicare.

Background
2022 Final Legislative Session

Action: Contact WA MOCs
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: In the event that Democrats lose their trifecta, I am asking Congress to stay in session for the remainder of this calendar year so we can minimize the harm Republicans can do by:

  • Accomplishing as much legislative clean-up as possible. This means passing wildly popular bills like the Marriage Equality Act, and the Electoral Count Act that are ready to pass on the floor, but we know Republicans would never bring up for a vote.
  • Preventing hostage taking in the 118th Congress. This means lifting the debt ceiling so Republicans don’t have a hostage to take next year–threatening Social Security, Medicare and the entire global economy!
