Weekly Call To Action - May 8, 2022

5/8/2022

Quote of the Week:

The greatest sin is to do nothing because you can only do a little. – Edmund Burke, Irish-born, British statesman, philosopher

From the CTA Team

At county, state and federal levels, our right to privacy in our daily lives and in the lives of those we love is under direct, immediate and sustained assault. This is the culmination of Republican efforts to shred protections of our most basic rights; future Calls to Action will keep a steady focus on combating their efforts.

Take Three Actions Now:

Our Rights Are Not Safe
Even if We Live in A Blue State

Olympia Indivisible Statement
If you have stepped back from active Olympia Indivisible work, for whatever reason, we call you to step forward now.

We knew this fight was not just a sprint until a Democratic President was elected. It is clearly a marathon shredding of the fundamental social and civil fabric of our lives.

You know in your gut that our right to govern our bodies is under attack, LBGTQ+ rights are under attack, our right to VOTE (if you are a person of color, poor or a Democrat) is under attack. This recent column by Jonathan Capeheart clearly describes the path from overturning Roe v Wade to removing other basic human rights.

If the election of a toxic racist in 2016 was a clarion call to resist, this current assault on our right to privacy and choice for every woman is the clarion call to re-engage with renewed vigor and in larger numbers.

Tyrants are being emboldened around the world as well as here at home. Now is the time to show up and fight with our wisdom, our presence, our ingenuity, our money and our courage.

Action 1: Back our Senators’ strong stance on protecting our rights.

Option A: Contact your Senators by telephone or email.

  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
    • Email both your MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: My name is _________ and I am calling from __________ to ask you to do everything you can to codify the protections of Roe v Wade into law and the right to contraception. The health and lives of millions of women are at stake. Just as vital is the need to protect marriage equality, both for LGBTQ and interracial marriages. Thank you.

Happy Mother’s Day
Motherhood Is Now a Choice

What Comes Next?

Picture

Now a woman can choose to be a mother when and if she wants to. Fifty years ago with Roe v Wade in place, contraception, sex education, and planned parenthood women could choose to go to college (now more than half of college students are women), she could have a career (doctors, lawyers, engineers, educators), she had a life of her choice. When the time was right (her choice) she could have a child or two and continue with her life, pause to raise the children, or continue with her career with child care help.

What happens if you have no control over your reproductive capacities, five, six, seven children? More like our grandmothers than our mothers. If the judicial conservatives of the Supreme Court eliminate Roe v Wade, McConnell is agreeable to proposing an abortion ban as a federal law, there are suggestions that contraceptives will be banned, and using an IUD would be a crime.

This is a crime against womanhood. Most families can barely make it with two incomes. What happens with more children, unaffordable child care, and uneducated women?

Action 2: Call the mothers in your family or your circle and wish them happy mother’s day and ask what they will do to save women’s lives. Ask the fathers the same thing. This is a national emergency.

Recommendation: If you don’t follow Heather Cox Richardson, she is a clear voice on the facts and the history of our issues. She has a wonderful column today on motherhood and activism which we recommend. May 7, 2022 - by Heather Cox Richardson (substack.com

Support ALL Refugees!

Picture
Afghans are subject to considerably stricter rules than Ukrainian refugees. For example, USCIS is waiving fees for Ukrainians applying for humanitarian parole. This is the humane thing to do, but we should welcome all refugees fleeing violence with the same humanitarian consideration.

Why then are we still charging Afghans $575 per person? Considering our 20-year war and the fact that no allies are willing to absorb large numbers of Afghan refugees, the US has a special obligation here.

And why are so many Black/POC refugees fleeing violence being denied similar humanitarian consideration? Since President Biden took office, the US has removed over 20,000 refugees, most of whom are Black, to Haiti.
The stark difference in our treatment of refugees is undeniable. This double standard is racist, exclusionary, and must stop!

Action 3: Contact your MoC in support of Immigration/Immigrant Rights

Option A: Contact your Senators by telephone or email.

  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: My name is ___________, and I live in ______________. All refugees deserve an immigration system that respects the right to seek asylum and honors the promise of refuge, and a system that creates a pathway to permanent status and citizenship, that centers the humanity and dignity of all people. I support making it easier for our Ukrainian, Haitian and Afghan allies seeking asylum in the US. All people deserve to know peace and deserve to be welcomed and protected. We should be giving all refugees the same consideration.
