Weekly Call To Action - May 15, 2022

5/15/2022

Quote of the Week:

“Hope is important, now more than ever. I don’t suggest that we can or should be blindly optimistic. Far from it. Our very democracy and our ability to solve the problems all our people face is in grave danger. But defeat is not inevitable. We need the hope that the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard defined as “a passion for what is possible.” Never has it been more important to recognize and aggressively believe in the possibility we have as a people to save our democracy, if we are willing.”
 —Maya Wiley, New Republic

Take Two Actions Now:

OI All-Member Gathering:
Responding to Roe v. Wade

Sign Up, Show Up Today! May 15, 6-7pm

Picture

Today’s one-hour Zoom gathering is a chance for us to process this moment in community, learn about how Washington is positioned for funding, protecting, and expanding access to abortion, what our representatives are saying, and how we can take meaningful actions, now, to make a difference.

Action 1: Register for the Responding to Roe v. Wade gathering tonight.

Support and Elect
Pro-Democracy, Pro-Choice Representatives!

Background:
Here in Washington and across our nation, pro-democracy Democrats are our first line of defense to protect reproductive rights. Here in Washington, our Democratic-led legislature has been strengthening both protections and funding over the past four sessions. What has made these advances possible is our Democratic trifecta.

We need to protect this trifecta, because the Republicans in the Legislature are voting party line to dismantle women’s rights. Locally, in Republican-led Legislative Districts 35 and 2, State Representatives and Senators have consistently opposed all legislation to strengthen reproductive rights and voted for their elimination. In Democratic-led Legislative District 22, Democrats Bateman, Dolan, and Hunt have championed women’s reproductive rights. So have our federal representatives in Congressional District 10.

What’s at stake for our 2022 mid-terms? At the federal level, pro-choice, and pro-democracy. Congressional representative Dr. Kim Schrier in CD-8 is in the fight of her political life against anti-abortion Republican candidates. Schrier’s race is THE most contested federal race in Washington and one of the most contested races in the nation. Schrier needs your help!

Action 1A: Volunteer to re-elect Congressional Rep. Kim Schrier! Take the CD-8 survey to let the Schier campaign know what kind of time and help you can offer.

Action 1B: Carpool with OI Steering Committee members Lisa O. and Melinda H. this coming Sunday, May 22nd, to doorbell in Graham for Kim! We’ll be leaving Olympia around 10:45am and returning by 3:30pm. Please use this form to indicate you would like to join us. Contact OI Steering Committee

Meet with Mary Hall, Thurston County Auditor

Corrected Date, May 23

Picture

Olympia Indivisible and Lacey’s Grey Indivisible agree: with all the disinformation about voter fraud, non-secured voting methods and growing mistrust in the election process, all of us who care about democracy need insight and clarity about electoral practices and the challenges our electoral workers are facing.

On Monday May 23, 2022 at 9:45 AM on the Panorama campus we will host award-winning elections administrator Thurston County Auditor, Mary Hall as guest speaker to address these issues.

Action: Please join us at Panorama for this presentation. Come to 1751 Circle Lane SE, Lacey, where a member will meet you at the colorful Chihuly glass fountain in the front of Panorama Hall. There is ample parking in 2 lots adjacent to the right of the traffic circle.

For everyone’s health we will require masks to be worn. Following the presentation there will be opportunity for conversation and light morning
refreshments.
