Weekly Call To Action - March 5, 2023

3/5/2023

Quote of the Week:

“Life is political, not because the world cares about how you feel, but because the world reacts to what you do. The minor choices we make are a kind of vote, making it more or less likely that free and fair elections will be held in the future. In the politics of the everyday, our words and gestures, or their absence, count very much.” ― Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century

Legislative Actions:

Picture

Critical Reminder.
In order to stay alive, bills must be passed out of the chamber they originated in by the end of day March 8. If they don’t pass, then they have to wait until next year’s legislative session before they can be reintroduced. It is urgent that you let your legislators know of your support for bills that are in jeopardy ASAP, urge their support for passage out of their chamber.

Federal Actions:

Oppose Exclusionary Asylum Application Processes

Picture

This action comes from Americans of Conscience Checklist.

Requiring a mobile app to apply for asylum comes with major issues: the app’s facial recognition technology can’t identify the features of darker-skinned aspiring Americans and young children, which prevents individuals and families from making asylum appointments, and many people seeking refuge do not have access to cell phones that can support the software.

Action: Copy and paste the script below into the U.S. Customs & Border Patrol comment form (under Topic, select CBP One APP).

Script: I want to express my concern about racial bias in the CBP One mobile app. I’m urging CBP to repair the facial recognition problems with the CBP One app, re-open other application avenues for asylum seekers, and offer immediate assistance to those affected.

In-Person Community Action to Halt DNR Forest Sales, March 7

Picture

This is a crucial time for us to protect the last 5% legacy forest in Western Washington. Just in the first few months in 2023 four Capitol forest parcels are being sold among many others. We depend upon legacy forests for crucial carbon sequestration, these cuts set back our local and state emission reduction goals by decades. These trees are quite literally the lungs of Western Washington!

What: Join Friends of Trees and the Thurson Climate Action Team Art in Action Group for an in-person community action to demand a moratorium of monthly legacy forest sales.
When: Tuesday, March 7 at 8:45am
Where: Department of Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. SE Olympia
What to Wear: Come wearing all black and TCAT will supply bright yellow caution tape arm bands.
Community Action at the end of the meeting (whether or not you testify):
  1. When the 1st motion for sale is called we all rise.
  2. When the second motion is called we turn our backs but stand still.
  3. After they vote we all file out silently.

Action: Just Show Up! You can provide a two-minute testimony at the meeting if you wish but showing up is what is truly needed. For more information and /or to sign up to testify, fill out this form.

Olympia-Tumwater Fire Authority Forum March 29

Olympia Fire Department Ladder Truck

Upcoming Special Election on How Fire Services Are Delivered
In the April 25 special election, Olympia and Tumwater residents will vote on how their fire services are delivered. The ballot measure, if passed, will authorize the creation of a Regional Fire Authority (RFA) to replace the two cities’ fire departments. An RFA is a special purpose government, overseen by its own commissioners.

About the Pros and Cons
The League of Women Voters of Thurston County, in partnership with The JOLT News Organization (publisher of The Journal of Olympia, Lacey & Tumwater), will hold a public educational forum on the ballot measure concerning the formation of an Olympia-Tumwater Fire Authority.

The forum will include a panel discussion providing information and background about the proposal, and the pros and cons that voters should weigh before they cast their ballots. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Action: Attend the forum in person or view online. It will be at the Thurston Community Media Studio, 440 Yauger Way SW, Olympia, on Wednesday, March 29, starting at 6:30 p.m. Seating may be limited, so watch the LWVTC website and the JOLT website for more information about registration and ticketing.
