Weekly Call To Action - June 11, 2023

6/10/2023

Quote of the Week:

“Democrats’ chances of winning back control of the House of Representatives in 2024 just got a big boost from the most unlikely of places: the conservative-dominated Supreme Court.” -- Christian Paz, VOX

Federal Actions:

Co-sponsor the Judiciary Act of 2023

Front view of the Supreme Court of the USA

SCOTUS is stacked with justices handpicked by MAGA Republicans and dark money groups, and it is running out of control. This court has too much power to be ignored, and if we want our government and its policies to reflect the will of our beautifully diverse country, we must restore SCOTUS to a place of legitimacy. Senators Markey and Smith have reintroduced the Judiciary Act of 2023 to add four justices to the bench and undo decades of conservative court-packing.

Action: Contact your senators and make sure they are signed on today.

Contact WA Senators
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
    • Email both your MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: Hello, I’m a constituent from Olympia, Washington, and I am calling to urge Senators Murray and Cantwell to co-sponsor the Judiciary Act of 2023, the bill to expand the Supreme Court by four seats. Far-right dark money groups have been rigging our courts for decades, and have stacked the bench with extremists who are beholden to special interests and the GOP. As a result, I have lost confidence that the Supreme Court is a fair arbiter of justice in this country that will uphold my constitutional rights like the right to an abortion. Expanding the Supreme Court will undo the damage that has been done and would restore faith and trust in the institution.

Supreme Court expansion is just the first step in ensuring our judiciary is a fair, objective body that represents the constitution and the rights of the American people. Will Senators Murray and Cantwell co-sponsor the Judiciary Act of 2023? We must act now to save our abortion rights.

Remove 2020 Election Deniers from YouTube

YouTube Logo

On June 2nd, YouTube said it will no longer remove content featuring false claims that the 2020 US presidential election was stolen, reversing a policy instituted more than two years ago amid a wave of misinformation about the election.

The platform said in a blog post that it will stop removing “content that advances false claims that widespread fraud, errors, or glitches occurred in the 2020 and other past US Presidential elections.”

The announcement comes in the run-up to the 2024 US presidential election and at a time when former President Donald Trump, the current frontrunner in the Republican primary, continues to make baseless claims about the previous election.

Additional Background
  • YouTube will now allow 2020 election denialism content, in policy reversal
  • YouTube reverses policy, will allow election denial

Help Olympia Build a Stronger/More Inclusive Economy

Capitol dome logo of the City of Olympia

Over the past ten months, residents and organizations have participated in digital questionnaires, focus groups and person-on-the street interviews to share the actions that could help build a stronger, more inclusive economy. Now, community members have two ways to hear what the City has learned, next steps, and the areas of strength that exist today.

  • 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 12 on Zoom (register here) for an online presentation followed by a question and answer session.
  • 5:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14 at City Council Chambers, 601 4th Avenue E. Presentation at 5:45 p.m., followed by the chance to ask questions, share your ideas and visit informally with some of the City’s partners whose programs are already making a difference.

Each open house will share the same presentation previewing an Olympia Strong roadmap for economic opportunity. The roadmap showcases initiatives within four focus areas identified by the community: Education and Workforce Pathways; Housing and a Sense of Security; Business Enterprise Resources and Support; and Community Pride, Lovability and Resilience. This work will inform Olympia’s Economic Development work plans and an update to the Economy and Housing chapters of the City of Olympia’s Comprehensive Plan, Olympia 2045. The updated Comprehensive Plan’s goals and policies will guide decision-making, partnerships and investments over the next twenty years.
