Citywide Celebration:

Invitation from New Life Baptist Church to Celebrate Martin Luther King

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration at the New Life Baptist Church, 7838 Pacific Avenue, Lacey, WA 98503
Dear Friends,

After many years of absence, we invite you to the resumption of a community-wide celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday on Monday, January 16th at New Life Baptist Church – 7838 Pacific Avenue SE in Lacey at 12:00 noon.

It is our plan to make this community gathering an annual event to honor the visionary life and work of Dr. King – especially his radical call for peace, freedom, liberty, and justice for ALL people.

The featured speaker will be Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland. We will also be joined by other guests and dignitaries representing the various municipal jurisdictions and local organizations.

Action: Please join us for a time of deep reflection on our collective racial healing and creation of a community in which everyone is cared for in the absence of poverty, hunger, homelessness, racial discrimination, and hate. We look forward to your presence at this community event.

Questions can be directed to Dr. Thelma Jackson 360-259-7304 thelmajackson@comcast.net

Here Are Some Other Ways To Honor Dr. King

Dr. King was born in 1929; his actual birthday is January 15th. Would have been 94 this year, had he still been alive. A great thing to do on Dr. Martin Luther King Day (Monday, January 16) is to engage in service and racial justice learning.

  • For service consider participating in Monday, January 16 restoration activities at Woodland Creek Community Park.
  • For racial justice learning, here are some book suggestions from our friends at Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates Washington: Hood Feminism and Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
  • For making a meaningful financial offering, please consider donating to the Save Selma 2023 Fund to help one of the poorest cities in Alabama, though rich in civil rights activism, recover from devastating tornado damage.
  • If you’d like to read more about Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, his autobiography edited by Clayborne Carson or Behind the Public Veil by Lewis V. Baldwin are great choices.
  • If you’re looking to read more by black authors, this list has a lot of different suggestions.

Local Actions:

Thurston Youth Climate Coalition Solidarity

Thurston Youth Climate Coalition protest

Do you remember the epic Youth Die-In at Olympia City Council last spring? The Thurston Youth Climate Coalition (TYCC) is back at it!

Action 1: Come out on January 17th to the Tumwater City Council Meeting at 7:00 pm at Tumwater City Hall 555 Israel Rd, SW Tumwater, where youth will be giving public testimony. You are encouraged to attend in solidarity and help the TYCC pack the room. Please wear green to show support for youth demands.

The TYCC Demands that the City of Tumwater:
  • Declare a Climate Emergency
  • Pass an Implementation Strategy for the Thurston Climate Mitigation Plan
  • Develop emergency governing procedures and free up emergency funds to respond to the climate crisis with the necessary speed.

Action 2: Weekly Climate Sign Waving
Another way you can support TYCC is joining weekly climate sign waving on 4th Ave Fridays by the Kissing Statue at 5:00 pm. Bring your climate signs! Youth ages 13-21 are invited to stay for 6:00 pm TYCC meetings directly following sign waving.
