Federal Actions:Demand the Wealthy Pay Their Share of TaxesOn February 13, 2023, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren introduced S.393 - A bill to enhance Social Security benefits and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program. This bill will increase SSI benefit by $200 per month and eliminate the ceiling on payroll taxes. Currently only the first $160,000 of one’s payroll is taxed for Social Security which means Wall Street CEOs or football players making $30 million a year do not pay SSI tax on the remaining $29,840,000 of their income. This bill would eliminate the cap prolonging the program’s solvency for years to come, while not raising taxes on the 93% of Americans who earn less than $250,000 per year. Reps. Jan Schakowsky and Val Hoyle in the House, on February 14, 2023 introduced H.R. 1046 as a companion bill. Action: Contact your representatives.
