12/16/2023

Quote of the Week:

“As we move forward and continue to seek justice, our greatest wish is that no-one – no election worker, or voter, or school board member, or anyone else ever experiences anything like we went through. You all matter and you are all important.”

Wrongfully accused former election worker Ms. Shaye Moss speaks to reporters after a jury orders Rudolph Giuliani to pay nearly $150 million in damages for defaming her and her mother after the 2020 election. December 15, 2024

Legislative Actions:

TAN Changes

A star shape that is blue on the left and red on the right
TAN is a platform developed for Washington State activists, like you, where you can easily take actions on important legislative bills, be informed of local meetings and town halls, and follow what is happening on important issues throughout the year.

Please take a bit of time to get familiar with the exciting changes made to your TAN dashboard by watching a few short videos Here.

If you are not yet on TAN, please join Here.

The legislative session starts on January 8, 2024. The Washington Legislative Action Team (WILA) is excited to bring you TAN actions to make a difference in our laws.

One simple way of influencing legislation is by indicating “pro” or “con” when requested by your TAN daily dashboard for those bills we are supporting. For example, this session's bill SB 5237 will provide corrective action when a school board blatantly disregards Washington State School Policy. Last session 1112 conservatives signed in ‘Con’ to try to defeat this oversight of school boards. We only had 13 progressives sign in ‘Pro’ to support the bill. Join TAN and help defeat unethical bill

WA State Actions:

Be a Signature Observer for “Backwards Washington” Initiatives

FUSE needs your help.

Washington’s wealthiest MAGA Republican donors are beginning to submit signatures to the state for their “Backwards Washington” initiatives, which would roll back programs that help our kids and their schools, working families trying to afford childcare, seniors who benefit from long-term care, and clean energy solutions that tackle the growing climate crisis.

Here’s the initiatives and what they do:
  1. I-2109: Repeals Washington’s capital gains tax on top 0.2%, defunding early learning and education
  2. I-2117: Ends Washington’s program to fund clean energy and fight climate change by making polluters pay and repeals the Climate Commitment Act
  3. I-2124: Repeals long-term care coverage for working Washingtonians
  4. I-2113: Repeals best practice safety standards for dangerous high speed chases
  5. I-2081: A confusing mishmash of existing law designed to entice parents into signing the other initiatives while doing nothing for kids and schools
  6. I-2111: Ensures that Washington’s wealthiest 1% won’t contribute to our communities by banning progressive income taxes at the city, county, and state levels

We need signature counting observers to ensure these MAGA millionaires haven't violated any laws when gathering their initiatives' signatures for validation at the Secretary of State’s Office.

You can help safeguard our initiative system by being trained as a signature observer this month to certify that the rules are being followed. The Washington Secretary of State’s Office is holding these 30-minute trainings once a week for the next three weeks:
  • Wednesday, Dec 13th at 4:30pm
  • Wednesday, Dec 20th at 4:30pm
  • Thursday, Dec 28th at 4:30pm

Action: Will you register for an observer training to protect our initiative process? Once you’ve been trained by the state, we will follow up via email to help you sign up for a shift as an official observer.

Thanks for all that you do,
Aaron and the entire team at Fuse

Federal Actions:

Stop Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution is a crisis threatening our public health, our climate, our economy, and our planet. Plastic production and waste is fueling climate change and poisoning our bodies through the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. And unless we act, things are only going to get worse. The Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act of 2023, from U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (D-CA-02) is the national strategy we need to address this growing crisis.

Action: Hold our Members of Congress accountable concerning co-sponsoring for this bill.

Script: I am a constituent living in [YOUR CITY]. I want to ask Senator Cantwell to follow Senator Murray’s and Representative Strickland’s leads and become a co-sponsor for the Break Free From Plastics Act (S. 3127, H.R. 6053). Plastic pollution is a huge concern for me. Plastic pollution has exploded into a global crisis that threatens our public health, economic security, and the future of our planet.

This bill would help reduce the amount of plastic produced and reform our broken waste and recycling systems.

Thank you, Senator Murray and Representative Strickland. Senator Cantwell, it’s time for you to show leadership for your constituents on this matter.

Salmon River Dam Breaching Plan Moves Forward

Salmon jumping in a river.
Your work pays off!

This week, the Biden Administration announced its commitment to partnering with the Six Sovereigns on actions that address the urgency of the salmon, climate, energy, and Tribal justice crises facing the Columbia River Basin. “Six Sovereigns” are the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Spring Reservation, the Nez Perce Tribe and the states of Oregon and Washington).

Based on the solutions outlined in the Columbia Basin Restoration Initiative (CBRI), the Biden administration announced a package of U.S. government actions and commitments to provide initial funding, resources, and steps to begin implementation of the CBRI.

Congress now must authorize breaching and decommissioning these four dams.

Action: Thank the Biden administration for its work and tell your representative and senators to restore a free-flowing Snake River and protect salmon and steelhead.
