Quote of the Week: "In my career I’ve been told I’m too young and I’m too old. Whether young or old, I’ve always known what endures–our North Star: The very idea of America, that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives. We’ve never fully lived up to that idea, but we’ve never walked away from it either." – President Biden, State of the Union Address 2024 Campaigns, Get Active:Photo Source: Wikimedia Commons Take Action Network (TAN) is one of our most valuable tools in the yearly Legislative Sessions. TAN allows us to make our individual voices heard, and to join in activities that support our issues or candidates. The TAN creators have expanded the TAN system so that it can be used throughout this very important election year. Federal Actions: Repeal the Limitation of Liability ActThe company that owns the ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last week is trying to use a 173-year-old law to cap the damages it may have to pay, including potential compensation to families of the six workers killed in the disaster. Action: Copy the following script and contact your Members of Congress to repeal the Limitation of Liability Act. Script: I understand that the company that owns the ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key bridge has filed an action in federal court using the Limitation of Liability Act, an antiquated law from 1851, to argue that the damages it owes for the crash should be capped at $43 million. That’s outrageous. The Limitation of Liability Act has been used for 175 years to protect wealthy owners from having to pay for damages their ships caused. It needs to be repealed. Grace Ocean Private Limited and other companies like it must be made to pay what they owe. In the meantime, I fully support the federal government’s covering the cost of rebuilding the bridge and hope the Congressmember will as well. Thanks. Budget for Salmon Restoration From our friends at Save our Wild Salmon The Columbia Basin Restoration Initiative (CBRI) in December was a major milestone on the path toward restoring salmon and honoring agreements with Tribal Nations, but there is still much left to accomplish. President Biden’s FY 2025 budget includes important funding for the CBRI. If you are not familiar with the long and complicated history behind the CBRI there is a brief summary below. Also attached is a recent Seattle Times Op-ed, Roll on Columbia: How to meet WA’s complex power, conservation needs, by former WA Gov. Dan Evans, Les Purce & KC Golden. The CBRI provides a long-awaited path in achieving equitable solutions for our region’s cultures and ecosystems. Maintaining the status quo definitely does not. Your ongoing advocacy is critical, essential in realizing these solutions. Action: Let your Members of Congress know we must secure this funding to realize equitable solutions for salmon, orca, Tribal Nations, farmers and power consumers.
