Quote of the Week:“We are in a fight for the future of this country and it's extremely winnable, but we need people to commit to it, show up, and participate. Nothing's going to happen automatically, but I do believe we're the majority and that the job always has been — and this is contrary to what I see some people think about climate and other things — the job is not to convert our enemies. The job is to motivate our friends. – Rebecca Solnit from The Ink Campaigns, Get Active:From OI’s E-CHAT Team May 4th Marie for Congress Campaign Kickoff & Canvass! From OI’s E-PAT Team Your Help is Needed Now for Biden to Win ARIZONA in NovemberPhoto Credit: Carla Wulfsberg In 2020, Biden won Arizona by just 10,457 votes - less than 1%. Today, fewer Democrats are registered to vote in Arizona than Republicans or Independents. Your help is needed to register voters - and you can do it from home. All you need is a smartphone and a computer or tablet. The dialing software, Hubdialer, masks your phone number and will dial the calls for you. A script is provided. Olympia Indivisible members Kelly and Carla are hosting three slow-paced group phone bank training sessions in May on Zoom. They will teach you the basics of making calls to register likely Democratic voters in Arizona and help you to overcome any fear you might have about making phone calls to strangers. We won’t be making calls during the training session. What: Slow-Paced Phone Bank Training to Register Democratic-leaning voters in Arizona When: Choose one of the following dates and register.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with information about joining the meeting and the Zoom link. From Indivisible National National Phonebank: Abortion is on the BallotWe need you to show up on May 2 to talk to voters about what’s at stake and what a future under Donald Trump and Republicans would really look like. When: May 2, 2024 04:00 PM What: Join us for a virtual phonebank on the anniversary of the Supreme Court's leaked opinion overturning Roe and gutting our reproductive freedoms. We'll reach out to voters in key states where abortion access is on the ballot this November. Action: Register HERE From OI’s GOTV Writing Team Write to Get Out the Vote In CD8These postcards will get out the vote in U.S. Representative Kim Schrier's Congressional District 8. Tell REI: Stop union-busting!Photo Source: Rochelle Hartman Wikimedia Commons REI’s workers are organizing to get what every worker deserves: predictable scheduling, a living wage, and safe working conditions. They have voted to unionize in ten stores, the latest in Santa Cruz. REI, one of our oldest cooperatives, requires its suppliers to “recognize and respect the legal rights of employees to free association.” But for bargaining with its own workers, REI has retained Morgan Lewis, the law firm that argued that the National Labor Relations Board itself was unconstitutional. REI has been dragging its feet in contract negotiations since 2022, provoking over 80 unfair labor practice charges. Action 1: Act online now: go to Tell REI: Negotiate a Contract and tell REI management to bring back co-op values, give workers the respect they deserve, and stop union-busting. The site has a script you can customize. Action 2: Leaflet at Olympia’s REI store in May: Sign up at the UFCW website. Have You Scheduled These Events?Action Cafe 2024, Every Monday at Noon

Racial Microaggressions: What Are They & Why Are They Harmful? Saturday, May 4 - 10:30am-12:00pm When we engage in conversations across cultures, there is always the risk that what we say might offend someone. Oftentimes we don’t even know why what we said was offensive. But rather than risk offending many people avoid cross-cultural dialogue altogether or cling to “politically correct” terminology. The tightrope we walk and the mental labor that ensues is exhausting and often leaves everyone involved feeling unheard or misunderstood. What has commonly become known as microaggressions will be presented. ______________________ It Is Time for Olympia Indivisible’s Hunger Walk Team’s Annual Fundraising Challenge! The deadline is May 5. As a result of our efforts, hungry neighbors will be served warm meals in encampments, at shelters, and other locations. Others facing hunger will pick up food supplies at the food bank's two main pantries or its satellites. 100% of your donation benefits two hard-working local agencies that get groceries or meals to our hungry neighbors: Thurston County Food Bank and The Community Kitchen. Action: Help us reach Olympia Indivisible/s fundraising goal by donating here (and check out how other local teams are doing). Thank you so much to those who have already contributed.
