We are on the eve of the most significant battle in America for voting rights in half a century. On March 24, the US Senate will begin consideration of the “For the People Act,” which would update, protect, and expand voting rights in America. This bill has already passed the US House of Representatives, and it’s the most important congressional legislation on voting and elections since the Voting Rights Act in 1965. On the eve of this bill, David Domke, Common Power’s Director of Fieldwork and Education, invites you to sign up for two lectures he is doing, “The Fight to Vote in America 2021,” on March 22 and 23. Overview: The 2020 election has brought America to a defining crossroads in the fight for voting rights for all. The expansion of voting mechanisms due to Covid, the successes of the Democratic Party, and the record voter turnouts nationally, especially among African Americans, were unacceptable to the Republican Party, which has built its success since the 1960s on voter suppression. Donald Trump and GOP allies responded with an attempt to overthrow the election, and now in early 2021 Republicans are pursuing legislation across the country that would make it harder for all Americans, and especially Democratic constituencies, to vote. The good news is that Democrats and progressive organizations are fully engaged, and we have a clear, significant role to play. These lectures lay out the pathways we must take right now in the fight to vote in America. How Can We Support Common Power Olympia Indivisible has worked with Common Power on voter advocacy programs during the presidential election. We are encouraging OI members to participate in Common Power’s advocacy initiatives for HR1 and their fight against voter suppression in key states. We encourage members who have the means to pay for these lectures to do so. This is one of the ways that Common Power can continue their wonderful work. Viewing details: Both lectures
