Cookies and Conversations 2021

3/2/2021

WOW!  We Indivisiblers (that's you and me) accomplished a lot in 2020!  We now have a slice of time to celebrate what we accomplished and build a more resilient and equitable democracy.

Those accomplishments will be on display during Olympia Indivisible’s  All-Member Meeting on March 6 at 6:00 PM. Watch your inbox or check out our website for details and to sign up.
To help prepare for the task ahead, Olympia Indivisible Membership invites you to:
Cookies & Conversations 2021
Progress and Pushback
Wednesday, March 10, 7:00 pm

What Is Cookies & Conversations? Cookies & Conversations is a living room conversation with cookies (which we have transitioned to Zoom to get through COVID). It's a chance to meet and chat with Olympia Indivisible members about things that matter!

What Is Progress And Pushback? In our nation, when there is progress, pushback inevitably follows. David Domke, Founder of Common Power, recently delivered a brilliant two-part lecture about this on Youtube. "Emerging from the Trump Presidency" illustrates how the progress/pushback cycle works so that we can prepare for what is ahead in 2021.

How Can I Sign Up To Participate? It's as easy as three steps:
  1. Watch David Domke's lectures: Lecture #1 and Lecture #2
  2. Register in advance for this meeting: After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
  3. Show up on March 10 with questions and thoughts. And cookies! You Gotta have cookies!

Questions? Email C&C host Glen Hubbard or give him a call at ‭(360) 539-7990‬.

Optional Content (You can stop here if you are busy. These are thoughts from Glen.)

ARE WE UP TO THE TASK?

A challenge for you: Watch the lectures. Emerging from the Trump presidency, Part 1, then Emerging from the Trump presidency, Part 2.

If you have a burning question or thought and want to be sure it is a topic, send an email to me.

A sample question: "Domke’s first lecture is largely about 'Moral Justice'. How does this fit in with morality in general?" The source for this question is from the book The Righteous Mind by Jonathon Haidt where morality is described as a matrix in which justice is just one tenet of morality--one which is more important to progressives than to conservatives.

If you don't have time to view the lectures or want to see some comprehensive notes compiled by one of our local heroes, send me an email or call me at 360-539-7990 and I will send you a PDF file.

You are encouraged to explore the following resources as you have time or inclination.

The Righteous Mind by Jonathon Haidt, subtitle "Why Good people are Divided by Politics and Religion".
  • The book is a very intellectual explanation of the author's theories regarding the psychology of morality.  The analogies used are easy to follow, the first being that the working of the human mind is like a rider on an elephant.  The elephant is 99% of the working of the mind and the rider(1%) is a guide. The basic idea is that most of our behavior is the elephant unconsciously bumbling along and occasionally needs the reasoning of the conscious mind (the rider) to help out.

  • Haidt compiled a catalog of six fundamental ideas that commonly undergird moral systems: care, fairness, liberty, loyalty, authority, and sanctity. Alongside these principles, he has found related themes that carry moral weight: divinity, community, hierarchy, tradition, sin, and degradation. His international research has led him to the conclusion that conservatives share a broader range of moral concerns than liberals, He sees the left and right as yin and yang, each contributing insights to which the other should listen.

I find the ideas in this book highly relevant to the Domke lecture content.

References and Suggestions:
  • A second book by this author: The Happiness Hypothesis.
  • Other suggested reading: On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder. A must-read if you haven't done so.
  • If you have read this far, here is a treat: Using Your Voice as a Political Choice, Amanda Gorman, TED Talk   And, if you watched this you may find yourself speaking up.
