Cookies and Conversation - American Demagogues - Part 2

7/25/2020

This Cookies and Conversation will be hosted by Glen and the Olympia Indivisible Membership team. Join us for what is sure to be a lively group discussion.

So, a two part lecture by David Domke was proposed as the topic for a Cookies and Conversation event.  The title is “American Demagogues”.

I watched and listened. The thoughts that came to mind are: Those of you who joined us for our discussion of “On Tyranny” know the clarity that can be gained by placing current events in historical perspective.  Now another voice is available that fills in the context for our country. He is David Domke of Common Purpose. Founder, Director Fieldwork & Learning.  His two part lecture is titled "American Demagogues".

The basic premise is that we can better understand Trump when we come to know the history and patterns of a “demagogue” vs an “ideologue.” We gain insight, not only into Trump’s behavior, but also the motivation that drives that behavior. A quantum of clarity came for me when “demagogues” are differentiated from “idiologues.”

The first video does the definitions and starts the history of demagogues. A good lecture.
The second lecture continues the history of American Demagogues and then concentrates on Trump. This video is to the point.

Here is the plan: A two part Cookies and Conversation; one for each video.
  • For the first the questions to pursue are: Did this give you any clarity and why?
  • For the second the question might be "Is the context of our political problem more clear now?

The videos are here:
  • American Demagogues - Lecture 1
  • American Demagogues lecture 5-21-2020

The videos are recorded Zoom events. You will need to give him some slack as the tech sometimes acts up. The age of Zoom is still evolving. The first 30 seconds of the second video got lost so be aware.

If you plan to participate, your assignment is to view the first video and take notes.

Keep Thursday, July 30th at 7PM open for this event.
Join me in a conversation via  Zoom Meeting on the 30th.

You will receive the Zoom invitation a few days before the event.
