Quote of the Week: “My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump, but we couldn’t imagine ourselves living any other way. We will not live on our knees, and you shouldn’t either.”--Former FBI Director James Comey, indicted last Thursday (9/25) at the direction of Trump’s Department of Justice Olympia Indivisible Major Events Olympia No Kings 2.0 Rally on October 18Save the date and show up! Federal Actions: Tell Senator Cantwell: No Blank Check for Trump; Tell Senator Murray: Thanks for Standing Firm From Indivisible: By September 30, the US Senate must pass a continuing resolution to keep the government going. In the last big funding fight, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and a handful of other Democrats surrendered, letting Trump weaponize federal funds to rob our services, militarize our cities, and terrorize our communities. That cannot happen again. Senator Patty Murray, D-WA, has staunchly opposed the continuing resolution: “Instead of sitting down with Democrats to prevent a shutdown and protect Americans’ health care, President Trump is threatening to inflict more pain on the American people—in red and blue states alike. [...] Trump needs to sit down and negotiate with Democrats to prevent a shutdown of his own making.” Her fellow senator Maria Cantwell, however, is hedging; she will not commit to “Aye” or “Nay.” Let’s tell her clearly what her constituents want. Action 1: Contact Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone 253-572-2281 (Tacoma); 202- 224-3441 (DC); if voicemails are full, call any regional office or Contact Form Script: I’m a constituent from [Your City]. We can’t have a repeat of the last government funding fight where Leader Schumer and some Senate Dems rolled over and voted through a partisan Republican spending bill. I’m counting on you to hold strong and push Leader Schumer to fight for a spending bill that protects healthcare AND puts meaningful checks on would-be King Donald. Action 2: Contact Senator Patty Murray, 253-572-3636 (Tacoma); 202-224-2621 (DC), if voicemails are full, call any regional office or email Contact Form Script: I’m a constituent from [Your City]. Thank you for holding the line on the continuing resolution and presenting a reasonable alternative. WA State Actions:Thank Secretary of State Hobbs for Protecting Personal Voter Data and Election Security Background: Washington denies DOJ request for voter rolls Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs has responded well on two fronts: the Trump administration’s demand for voters’ private information, and its cuts to election security funding. Two weeks ago, the Department of Justice demanded Washington’s voter registration list, including “all fields.” Hobbs agreed to provide only information that’s already public, citing Washington law and questioning DOJ’s authority and motivation for demanding sensitive information like full date of birth, partial Social Security number, and driver’s license number. Read Hobbs’ response to the DOJ for a textbook example of brushing off a bully in perfect legalese. As cyberthreats to election security have grown more sophisticated, federal funding cuts have put cybersecurity tools out of reach for fifteen Washington counties. In response, the Secretary of State is funding memberships in the Multi-State Information Sharing & Analysis Center (MS-ISAC), a trusted cybersecurity partner to over 18,000 state, local, tribal, and territorial governments. Action: Call or write Secretary of State Hobbs to thank him for taking these actions. Email: [email protected] Or call: 360-902-4151 Suggested Script: Thank you for your response to the Department of Justice request for our voter data, agreeing to release only information that is already public. And thank you for covering membership in MS-ISAC for our county auditors and election offices. We appreciate your respect for our privacy and your proactive attention to election security. Pack the Room: Show Your Support for the Workers’ Bill of Rights on October 7! This year, 13,000 of our neighbors signed their names in support of Prop 1, The Workers’ Bill of Rights. Honoring that, the City Council has placed it on the November ballot for the people to cast their vote. Currently, the Olympia City Council is considering voting in opposition to Prop 1, a move that might sway public opinion ahead of the election. Olympia Indivisible members have already weighed in on Prop 1 and endorsed it with 88.39% of 112 participants voting yes. Let’s show our city council the widespread support that got this on the ballot in the first place. This is our moment to stand up, share why we support Prop 1, and defend the right of the people to have the final say. Mythbusters Vote Yes on Prop 1, Workers Bill of Rights Join us to connect with fellow supporters before we walk over to Olympia City Hall (601 4th Ave E, Olympia) together on Tuesday, October 7th!
