Weekly Call To Action - October 6, 2024

10/5/2024

Quote of the Week:

“Vance is slick. He’s smart, an excellent liar, and whomever programmed his ‘compassion’ interface did a decent job—although I imagine it took a lot of battery life to keep it going. It’s understandable, albeit disheartening, that pundits leapt to the conclusion that he “won” the debate.

But undecided voters watching the debate felt differently. They loved Tim Walz—apparently his already high approval ratings skyrocketed during the event—and, while some stopped hating Vance quite as vehemently as they had, few seemed to believe anything he said. As for his evasive reply at the end? His unwillingness to say that Trump lost the election? It was BAD. Very, very bad. Not just in an objective way, but for electoral purposes. Swing voters detest election deniers. Vance basically slapped a sticker on his chest that said ‘I ❤️ January 6’ on national TV. It will be used against him relentlessly between now and November 5—in fact it already is.” Jessica Craven, Chop Wood, Carry Water, Oct. 2, 2024

Candidate Sign Waving Locations

Olympia Indivisible members sign waving
It's time to wave signs for the candidates OI has endorsed. We are anxious to help Dave Upthegrove get elected to the Land's Commissioner position, in particular, but signs for any endorsed candidate can help them get into office.

Here’s where, when, and how.

How can we talk about and prevent election sabotage?

MESSAGING OF THE WEEK TIP #7

Principles:
  1. Prime the outcome you want - Assume and express that Harris/Walz will win, so that when they do, it’s expected, not a surprise to be challenged.
  2. Goal: We need the margin of victory to be too big to overcome
  3. Message: MAGA Republicans and Trump are dangerous to us; they will lie about and attempt to sabotage the election. They want to take our freedoms by any means, at any cost. But we can and will stop them.
  4. Instead of saying “they are”, describe what “they will do”. Stay away from talking about Trump’s lies, or that he is racist/sexist/corrupt/old/a felon, or that “institutions” will save us. Don’t use MAGA phrases.
  5. 3 areas for discussion
    1. Discussion of how Project 2025 will affect our families is very effective in motivating people to vote (national abortion ban, tax cuts for the wealthy, eliminating marriage equality, banning books, or whatever might be important to the person you’re talking to. However, don’t provide a laundry list).
    2. MAGA Justices (not SCOTUS) taking away our freedoms, giving unchecked power to the president.
    3. Election sabotage - Lead with positive phrases rather than negation.
      1.  “Only eligible Americans vote.”
      2. “Voting results are verified.”
      3. “Here they go again, making claims of fraud so that they can overthrow the will of the people and take away our freedoms”.
