Weekly Call To Action - October 13, 2024

10/12/2024

Quote of the Week:

“Early voting has begun in many states across America. Our energies should be directed to voter turnout—especially those who are undecided about voting and those who did not vote in 2020. A particularly fruitful source of votes for Kamala Harris and Democrats is younger voters, who tend to favor Democratic and progressive candidates. If there are any young voters in your lives, help them register and encourage them to vote. But don’t stop there! Be a nudge to everyone in your lives and remind them to vote!!”--Robert Hubbell, Today’s Edition Newsletter, Oct. 11, 2024

Federal Action:

Stand with Amazon Workers

Current and former Amazon workers are exposing the injuries and injustices they've endured—and demanding accountability.

Since July, they’ve urgently requested a meeting with Amazon’s VP of Global Workplace Health & Safety, Sarah Rhoads, to address the company’s injury rate, which is more than double the industry average, and their experiences of being silenced and discarded after on-the-job injuries.

They’ve been mauled by dogs, forced to work through torn ACLs, suffered miscarriages and amputation. Some have family who lost their lives working at Amazon. Many were denied medical help, fired illegally, and pushed into poverty and homelessness by Amazon’s refusal to honor workers’ comp claims.

Amazon refuses to listen. On July 15, injured workers tried to deliver a letter with their stories to their NY office and were shut out, denied even the chance to step inside the building.

This must stop. Amazon workers are counting on you to stand with them.

Action: demand Amazon meet with their workers and take action to protect them.

Picture
What: Celebrate Democracy (a free, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC event)
When: Sunday, October 20th, from October 4-7pm
Where: St. Martin's University Marcus Pavilion, 5300 Pacific Avenue, Lacey

OI's Involvement: We'll bring our Kamala cut-out for selfies and do voter registration at one table and share our "wrapper" and KNOW TO VOTE NO on the ballot initiatives on another table.

Background: Celebrate Democracy is the brainchild of Dave Sederberg, the owner of Pacific Stage, a venerable sound and lighting production company in our region. He is also a visual artist and supporter of progressive causes. He has decided that Democracy warriors need an afternoon "off" to recharge as we do the work that needs doing. Celebrate Democracy will be an interactive multimedia, immersive, educational and entertaining event, featuring multiple artists and aerialists from Airbound Underground, jugglers, “Un-Fair” games, the Trickledown Merry-Go-Round, soap-boxing and baby kissing by local candidates, photo-ops galore and carnival music, all produced by installation artist David Sederberg and his Pacific Stage team.

Come to the Action Cafe!
Action Cafe is a weekly, Monday noontime virtual cafe where OI members meet, make new friends, and take actions together. Every Cafe comes with a side order of live music and a heapin’ helpin’ of good cheer!

Cafe patrons receive an email on Sunday with a sneak-peek at what we'll do at the cafe the next day. On Monday morning, Chef Lisa will send you a pdf "Menu" which has links to the actions we'll take together at the Cafe.

Action: Register HERE. We will send you a Zoom link and tomorrow morning, Chef Lisa will send your "menu."
