Weekly Call To Action - October 10, 2021

10/10/2021

Take Three Actions Now:

Protect Our Local Elections From "The Big Lie"

Picture

The Thurston County GOP has sent out a massive amount of volunteers to observe the general electoral process at the County's Ballot Processing Center in Tumwater. The embrace of the GOP across the nation of the lie that elections are rigged and stolen when Republicans don't win makes it crucial that there are both Democratic and Independent observers to ensure that false allegations do not go unchecked. Ballots dropped Oct. 7, so next week our election workers will be doing signature verifications and (possibly) ballot inspections.

Good News: Last Wednesday, OI co-founder put out a call to OI members asking registered Democrats to sign up as observers for next week and y’all knocked it out of the park! The Dems now have filled the slots for election observation...BUT, we still need registered Independents to sign up to be observers.

Action 1: Help Thurston County Auditor's Office protect our local elections from "The Big Lie" by signing up as a registered Independent observer on one or more of the following days next week:
  • Tuesday, Oct. 12 through Friday, Oct. 15;
  • Shifts are from 8:00 am - 10:00 am or 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.

How To Sign Up: Contact Lynette at the Thurston County Elections office Tuesday, October 12 after 2:00 pm at 360-786-5408 or 360-485-3671 or Email: elections@co.thurston.wa.us.  (Note, Monday is a holiday.) Lynette is coordinating sign-ups for those registered as Independents to observe in this Thurston County election. Get in touch, sign up for a shift (either 8:00 am - 10:00 am or 10:00 am - 12:00 pm; on October 12 through October 15), and then, if you have the time before you go to observe, watch the Path of the Ballot training video (four minutes long). But don't worry! You'll get on-site training. Please, wear a mask and do not sign up if you have not been vaccinated.

Threatening to Change the Filibuster Terrified the GOP into Raising the Debt Ceiling. Let’s do the Same For Voting Rights.

Picture
“President Biden last Tuesday said it is a “real possibility” that Senate Democrats could seek to revise the Chamber’s filibuster rules to overcome a Republican blockade on raising the debt ceiling.” The very next day Mitch McConnell suddenly offered to work with Democrats to fix the debt ceiling crisis. The President needs to use power to do the same for voting rights.

Action 2: Contact President Biden and tell him to publicly declare a “real possibility” that Senate Democrats could revise filibuster rules to overcome the Republican blockade on voting rights.

Call the White House Comment Line at 202-456-1111 Tues-Thurs, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Script: My name is _______ . I am calling from zip code ______ to urge the President to publicly raise the “real possibility” of the Senate Chamber revising the filibuster to overcome the Republican blockade of The Freedom to Vote Act. Last week, you said that revising the filibuster was a “real possibility” to overcome Republican blockage of raising the debt ceiling, and McConnell suddenly agreed to work with Democrats. Please use your power to do the same concerning the Freedom to Vote Act. Free and fair elections deserve no less.

Want to do more? Call our Senators and let them know you want them to adjust the filibuster now to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
  • Senator Patty Murray,  Phone: 253-572-3636 (Tacoma); 202-224-2621‬ (D.C.) or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone 253-572-2281 (Tacoma); 202- 224-3441‬ (D.C.) or Contact Form
  • Email both your MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Congressional Redistricting Comments Needed

Picture
Last week we asked you to comment on the Redistricting of our Legislative Districts.  This week we are focusing on the Redistricting of our Congressional Districts. We only get this chance once every 10 years! Written testimony is due to the commission by Oct 22.

You can see all 4 Commissioner proposed maps here: Commission Proposed Congressional Maps. The League of Women Voters map here.

The Sims and Walkinshaw maps keep CD10 close to what it is now.
The Graves map moves us completely out of CD10 and splits Thurston between CD8, CD6 and CD3. The Fain maps split the Thurston between CD10, CD6 and CD3.

What criteria must be considered in redrawing district boundaries?

Personalize your comments if possible. Read guidance from the League of Women Voters: How to write effective testimony. Written testimony is due to the commission by Oct 22.

League of Women Voters recommended talking point: Keep Olympia, Tumwater, and Lacey in CD10 with South Pierce County.

Action 3: Submit a Comment:

It is helpful if you would modify the script to make it more personal and say why keeping our voting district community-based  is important to you.
  • Submit Your Comment Online using this web form
    OR
  • Submit Comment By Email
You can email your public comment in any language to: comment@redistricting.wa.gov.

Email Subject Line: Congressional District Testimony

Script: I'm [NAME] from [CITY], [ZIP] . Please keep Thurston County in CD10.
The larger cities of Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater form strong communities of interest together in commerce, interlocal agreements and political advocacy groups.

Keeping communities of common interest together is more important than district competitiveness.

The Graves and Fain maps each split Thurston County into 3 Congressional Districts. The Graves map splits Lacey into 2 districts and the Fain map separates Olympia from Tumwater.

I urge you to keep Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater together in CD10 with South Pierce County as recommended by the League of Women Voters.

The criteria says: Keep communities of interest together and minimize the number of counties and municipalities divided into more than one district.

OI All Member Meeting

How are you feeling?
How do we move forward?

Picture
In early 2021, many Olympia Indivisible members stepped away from political engagement. If you’re one of those people, you're entitled. All of us need and deserve to take breathers from this work of defending democracy: time to do self-care, time to care for others. Although we hoped for ease and relief after four difficult years, there’s been plenty of trouble in 2021, between pandemic fatigue, catastrophic climate change in our region, and discouraging developments on our political landscape.

If we as a group want to continue to give a damn about the future for our planet and for our nation's battered, increasingly threatened democracy, we also have to make space to be real about how we are feeling as individuals about what’s happening now, and find ways to support each other and move forward.

We want to invite everyone in Olympia Indivisible to come to a
  • One-hour all-member Zoom gathering
  • Tuesday, October 19th at 7:00 pm

Come share your feelings or simply be with your fellow Indivisiblers as we create a space for acknowledgment, acceptance, fellowship, and resilience. A first step in our planning for 2022!
This gathering will be facilitated by OI member Melinda H., a veteran mental wellness counselor.

Action: Register here for this Tuesday, October 19, at 7:00 pm meeting.
