Weekly Call To Action - October 05, 2025

10/4/2025

Quote of the Week:

“Hope is often misunderstood. People tend to think that it is simply passive wishful thinking: I hope something will happen but I’m not going to do anything about it. This is indeed the opposite of real hope, which requires action and engagement.”--Jane Goodall, PhD, 1934-2025

Olympia Indivisible Major Events

Olympia No Kings 2.0 Rally on October 18

A crown with a red X through it signifying No Kings
Save the date and show up! On Saturday, October 18, we will once again peacefully gather in Olympia’s Capitol (and all across the nation) to say: America has no kings: the power belongs to the people, and the people choose democracy. Olympia Indivisible, in collaboration with Evergreen Resistance, is looking forward to hosting this peaceful, family-friendly, pro-democracy event.

We invite our members to lean in and help us make it a success! We will be back this coming week with opportunities to volunteer and participate.

Action: Sign up today to attend!

Action: Volunteer! Help pro-democracy candidates for our city councils, school boards, and Port win by showing up for boots-on-the-ground events this week. There are plenty of options including canvassing and campaign kick-offs. You’ll find them all on our 2025 Local Elections Campaign Support Events calendar. This calendar will be continuously updated. Also check it out on our website at any time.

Federal Actions:

Thank Senator Maria Cantwell for Voting Against the GOP’s Continuing Resolution

At this writing, the federal government – or about a third of it – is shut down for lack of funds. The Republican majority’s Continuing Resolution, which failed to pass September 30, put a high price on keeping the doors open: allowing health insurance subsidies to expire at the end of the year rather than extending them. Democrats resisted, citing the hardship the loss of Affordable Care Act assistance would impose on those least able to bear it.

Last week we suggested contacting Senator Maria Cantwell, who was silent in the week before the vote, to urge her to oppose the resolution. This week, let’s thank her for picking the right side.

Action: Contact Senator Maria Cantwell, phone 253-572-2281 (Tacoma); 202- 224-3441‬ (DC); if voicemails are full, call any regional office or Contact Form

Script: I’m a constituent from [Your City]. Thanks for standing firm in the face of the GOP’s bullying. The shutdown’s not pleasant, but sometimes you have to take a stand.

WA State Actions:

PBS is laying off journalists, but keeping high executive salaries. The outlet is axing nine union journalists, plus nonunion editors and other staffers. Cascade PBS paid its executives more than $2 million in fiscal year 2024,

From our friends at Northwest Progressive Institute:

Multimillionaire Brian Heywood is again circulating petitions for two measures to sabotage youth and LGBTQ+ rights.

Heywood’s been busy this year: he has fifteen initiatives on file with the Secretary of State’s office. Almost a third of them are attempts to reduce his taxes; two of them are worth watching:

IL26-001 would restore Heywood’s Initiative 2081 from last year to its original troglodytic form. The legislature adopted I-2081, amending it only to bring it into line with existing laws; Heywood wants that work undone. Like the original, this re-run is being promoted as “protecting parents’ rights”; it does so only at the expense of young people’s privacy and health.

IL26-638, yet another attack on the right’s latest scapegoat, would bar transgender girls from participating in girls' team sports in both schools and nonprofit organizations. Horrifically, it would require students' healthcare providers to report on their genitalia to school district officials.

Paid signature gatherers for these petitions have been reported in Olympia, Tumwater, and Lacey. One was reportedly overheard in a Fred Meyer restroom saying she was getting $5 per signature and considering going to San Diego, where she could get twice as much.

Action: Refuse to sign these petitions, tell friends and family to do the same.

Local Actions:

National Organization of Women Period Action Month

Background
  • Period Action National

As federal funding for local organizations decreases, the need for services increases, especially for women and children. For years the National Organization of Women (NOW) has helped women receive needed products and services; in October, NOW runs Period Action Day, collecting menstrual hygiene products and distributing them to women's service centers.

Olympia's local NOW group has conducted this fundraising for years and has asked OI to contribute this year. All items donated in Olympia will go to Thurston County groups.

Action: Drop off menstrual hygiene products at Soul Cafe, 300 5th Ave. SE, Olympia, or at other locations at times specified here.
