Quote of the Week: "The United States of America is still run by its citizens. Federal Actions:Investigate Trumps’ Corrupt Airplane Deal Photo by David Lusvardi on Unsplash Background At Trump’s directive, the Pentagon accepted a ‘luxury palace’ jet gifted by Qatar for the President’s use. Trump said the jet is worth $400,000,000, and that he would be ‘stupid’ not to accept it. Trump disregarded a clearly written constitutional requirement before directing acceptance of the jet. In order to prevent corruption, the Foreign Emoluments Clause establishes that the President is prohibited from accepting any present “of any kind whatsoever” from any king or foreign state without the consent of the Congress. Trump asked Pam Bondi, the Attorney General, about the consent of Congress requirement. Her opinion was that Trump can ignore it as long as the Pentagon has ownership of the jet during his term, and the United States passes it to the Trump Presidential Library after his term. They both disregarded big potential ethics issues. Before she was appointed Attorney General, Bondi was an official registered agent representing the Qatari government, earning $115,000 compensation per month. The Trump family has had close business relationships in Qatar for years and just reached a deal with a Qatari state-owned developer to build a $5.5 billion luxury golf course partnership. Also, because Air Force One is constantly used for top secret governmental business, it has serious security issues and will need to be retrofitted by the Department of Defense at U.S. expense. That is said to cost the U.S. up to a billion dollars and take years. There’s bipartisan opposition to this ‘deal’. A number of Republican Members are objecting about the ethics and practical issues and many Democratic Members are vocally opposed. Action: Request our Members of Congress support the demand for an ethics investigation. Members of Congress (MOCs)
Script: Dear Senator ________________, thank you for opposing Trump’s violation of the Emoluments Clause and making it clear that Trump cannot accept this $400,000,000 gift through the Pentagon without explicit consent from Congress. Please support Senator Reed’s demand for an ethics investigation into this matter. Also, during negotiations for the defense portion of the reconciliation bill, please support an amendment to block funds for upgrading the jet. Dear Representative Strickland, thank you for serving on the House Committee on Armed Services. Please support Senator Reed’s demand for an ethics investigation into the $400,000 gift jet matter, and advocate that Trump cannot accept the Qatar luxury jet by passing it through the Department of Defense and then having it sent to his Presidential library. Oppose the Genius Crypto ActPhoto by Kanchanara on Unsplash From OI’s Federal Watchdog Team and Indivisible of San Francisco Background
Unfortunately, 16 Democrats—including Senators Gillibrand, Alsobrooks, Gallego, and Warner—support the bill, arguing some regulation is better than none. But as Elizabeth Warren warns, a bill that boosts stablecoins while enabling corruption and risking national security is worse than no bill at all. Actions: Call or email your senator to demand they oppose a cryptocurrency bill enabling Trump’s corruption.
My name is __________. I am a constituent, and my zip code is ________. I am asking the Senator to vote against the Genius Act, a crypto-friendly bill that will enable and exacerbate Trump’s continued corruption. Unless the bill is revised to prevent Trump from taking crypto-bribes and to protect consumers against fraud and other matters, I urge her to oppose it when it comes up for a vote and work with other Democrats to make sure this dangerous bill does not pass. Email Script I am asking you to vote against the Genius Bill and to encourage other Democrat senators to do the same. This bill is dangerous because it will enable Donald Trump’s propensity for corruption such as taking crypto bribes by national as well as foreign actors or corporations. In addition, the bill does little to provide protections for consumers. It provides limited protections for deposits, lacks sufficient authority for regulation, and does not deter illicit activities like money-laundering.
