Weekly Call To Action - March 6, 2022

3/6/2022

Song of the Week:

Sting has reissued his song “Russians”. The Russians love their children too. He never thought it would be relevant again, unfortunately it is.

Here are the lyrics to the song. Sting - Russians Lyrics | AZLyrics.com

Take Two Actions Now:

Stand with Biden and Ukraine

Picture

Background: Russia, unprovoked, has invaded Ukraine, already murdering thousands of civilians and displacing more than a million people–one of the largest invasions in Europe since World War II. The US immediately implemented severe sanctions on Russia and helped lead the international diplomatic response.

This crisis presents two challenges:
  • how to support measures necessary to stop Putin’s aggression and war crimes
  • how to combat ongoing misinformation campaigns by US right-wing ‘media’ that provide support for Putin’s megalomania.

Thanks to the efforts of the Biden administration, the US foresaw the potential for Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and was prepared to immediately implement severe sanctions on Russia and led the coordinated international diplomatic response.

We understand that the effect of these sanctions will be felt globally, and are concerned for the ordinary Russian citizens who will face unprecedented deprivations as a result. We also know that these sanctions will impact our lives, in known and unknown ways. The right wing will use those impacts to blame Biden, and try to fuel right-wing outrage about rising fuel prices, food prices, and shortages.  We can be certain that right-wing networks in the US will spread disinformation for political gain. They will use the crisis to heighten partisan division, and blame Biden, Democrats, and any other political opponent in the US for Russia’s actions.

What can we do to combat this?
  • We can and should call on all Americans to come together to support Biden’s leadership and state our willingness to endure hardships in order to stop Putin’s aggression.
  • We should decry the aggressor who deserves the blame and accountability - Vladimir Putin.
  • We must call out right-wing media attempts to use this crisis to sow political division in our nation.

Action 1A: Contact your MOCs and tell them you support all possible measures to oppose Putin’s aggression and support Ukrainian resistance.

Contact WA MOCs
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script for MOC contact:   My name is ___________ and my zip code is ________.  I am a citizen who believes in non-violence, but also believes that Putin’s unprovoked unleashing of war on the innocent citizens of the Ukraine must be opposed. I support the Biden administration’s efforts to date.  I understand that taking a stand against Putin’s tyranny and oppression will affect our lives, though I am concerned about disproportionate effects on the poor.  I urge (Senator/Representative ______) to stand with President Biden and the entire western world in opposition to Putin’s deeply disturbing actions with immediate congressional actions such as funding for relief and defense packages and in helping the American people understand what we can do to support US efforts, and expect that Congress will consider the ramifications, particularly on disadvantaged folks.

Picture

Action 2A: Post to social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and send your friends and family emails that you support the strong and capable leadership of the Biden Administration, uniting the western world to support Ukrainian resistance, that you are ready to accept sacrifices for the sake of restoring global order, and that you reject efforts to misinform and divide Americans from uniting against Putin.

Script for Social Media Post: Freedom isn’t free! Combatting Putin’s naked aggression will mean all of us will feel increased hardships.  Let's stand together with our President, as our nation has in the past, to protect the U.S. and the Ukrainian people!  Efforts to blame anyone other than Putin are only meant to keep Americans focused on partisan divisions instead of rallying us together to stand up for freedom and democracy. Don’t trust media in the US that are spreading disinformation to exploit Putin’s murderous attack on Ukraine.

Reach out to family, friends, and neighbors who may be particularly affected by this crisis, and let them know that you are there to help.

Encourage President Biden to Take in Refugees From Ukraine

Picture

The White House took the right step Thursday to offer temporary protected status (TPS) to Ukrainians currently in the United States on business, tourism or student visas.

But President Biden needs to also move now to welcome Ukrainian refugees into the United States. "It would send a strong signal to Poland, Hungary and other nations taking in refugees if Mr. Biden would announce that the United States would accept tens of thousands of Ukrainians as well. The president can do this on his own, without Congress. This is yet another way to truly stand with the brave and industrious Ukrainian people and our allies around the world. It would also provide more workers for the U.S. economy."

Action 2: Contact the White House and our Senators to

Script: I urge President Biden to act now to welcome Ukrainian refugees. We must do our part and show countries like Poland and Hungary that they are not alone in helping Ukrainians fleeing the violence.

Contact President Biden
  • President Biden at 202-456-1111 Tues-Thurs, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM or Contact Us | The White House

Contact WA Senators, DC numbers
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 202-224-2621 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 202-224-3441 or Contact Form
    • Email both your MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Legislative Action of the Week:

Thank Rep. Jessica Bateman

Picture

Several bills that will help the housing crisis
did pass, but HB 1782 ‘Creating additional middle housing near transit and in areas traditionally dedicated to single-family detached housing’ sponsored by LD22 Rep. Jessica Bateman did not make it this year.

Rep. Bateman worked her heart out during many late night sessions.

This bill brought awareness to the housing problem and offered solutions. A major piece of progressive legislation often takes more than one session to pass.

Action: Thank Representative Bateman for her work this year. Please add your own words to make it more personal.

Option A: Send an email to Rep. Bateman at jessica.bateman@leg.wa.gov

Suggested Script: Dear Representative Bateman,

Thank you for your hard work on HB 1782. Even though it did not pass this year, I want you to know how much I appreciate your work to reduce the housing crisis.

I look forward to supporting your legislation next year.

Sincerely,
[NAME] [CITY, ZIP]

Option B: Take this action with one click in Take Action Network (TAN) Thank Rep. Jessica Bateman
