Ask President Biden to Deploy Renewable Energy Against Putin
Background: President Biden has halted all oil and gas imports from Russia, because we cannot add fuel to this war. Now, we must urge him to take another necessary step to protect our planet. With the price of gas increasing in the United States, policy-makers may be tempted to increase domestic fossil fuel production. This would be disastrous for our nation and the world.
Putin’s ability to wreak destruction on Ukraine is predicated on global dependence on his nation's fossil fuels. Oil and gas constitute forty percent of Russia’s national revenue, meaning Russian exports of oil and gas are literally funding this invasion. What’s more, global reliance on Russian oil and gas slowed our collective will to respond over fear of higher energy costs the world over.
Instead, Biden can use his executive powers to invoke the Defense Production Act and accelerate the development of renewable energy, lowering our reliance on fossil fuels for good.
Action 1: Contact President Biden
Option A: Email President Biden and ask him to use the Defense Production Act to rapidly ramp up the deployment of renewable energy.
Script: My name is _______ and I live in _________. I want to thank President Biden for halting oil and gas imports from Russia. I urge him to continue to resist short-sighted policies such as scaling up domestic fossil fuel production or expanding oil and gas infrastructure or financing, which would only deepen our dependence on fuels that lead to global instability and create further devastating climate impacts.
I ask President Biden to swiftly deploy his executive powers to weaken the geopolitical power of fossil fuels, address the climate emergency, and prevent further mass suffering.
The Defense Production Act can provide the opportunity to produce alternatives to fossil fuels, fight the climate emergency, combat the stranglehold that Putin and other dictators have on the world’s energy economy, and support the transition to a renewable and just economy.

Help Russian Journalists Stand Up to Putin
We can help end the war in Ukraine by helping the Russian people hear the truth. Although ethical journalism is blocked in Russia, Independent Russian Journalists that fled to Latvia are working to push back against Putin’s propaganda. You can read about their courageous work through the news outlet Meduza.
Despite being designated a “foreign agent” by Putin, Meduza continues to find ways to get the truth to the Russian people. You can donate directly (Help Meduza/Help Now button on the website). They are trusted, respected journalists that are directly helping Ukraine with their brave work. This is a tangible, real way to help end the war.
Action 2: Read Meduza reporting and donate here.
Olympia’s April 2nd Rally and March to Save Salmon
We have a historic opportunity to save salmon and orca with the comprehensive plan being developed by Gov. Inslee and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray to replace the services of the lower Snake River dams. Now we must demonstrate to Inslee and Murray that there is strong support for removing the dams. Their final decision will be made by July 31, 2022. By removing the dams, we will be honoring tribal treaty rights that have been ignored for decades.
