Weekly Call To Action - March 2, 2025

3/1/2025

Quote of the Week:

“This is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” -- Winston Churchill, 29 October 1941

Justice
Email your House Reps: Restore voting rights to incarcerated citizens
DEADLINE: Mar 12 • 5:00pm
The right to vote affirms our humanity, our voice, and our identity as Americans. But Washington’s prisons strip more than 14,000 voters of their most fundamental right as citizens. If we pass HB 1196, we can allow every citizen to make their voice heard, even while incarcerated.

Email the Appropriation committee to Support Ballot Access in Jails
DEADLINE: Mar 12 • 5:00pm
By requiring jails to give people the basics they need to vote, we can ensure that people awaiting trial or serving short sentences can make their voices heard.

Good Government
Email your reps: Make Election Day a State Holiday
DEADLINE: Mar 12 • 5:00pm
Make Election Day a state holiday in Washington!

Email in support of HB 1916 Amending voter registration challenges and managing voter registration lists.
DEADLINE: Mar 12 • 5:00pm
HB 1916 Limits frivolous claims by modifying forms, processes, and methods of adjudication for voter registration challenges.

Email in support of HB 1321 Restrictions on out of state military forces.
DEADLINE: Mar 12 • 5:00pm
HB 1321 gives the governor authority to limit outside military force activities within the state.

Email in support of SB 5225 Providing clarity where candidates for the same office have similar names.
DEADLINE: Mar 12 • 5:00pm
SB 5225 attempts to prevent efforts to intentionally confuse voters by recruiting non-serious candidates to file against serious candidates. The key is that there must be intent to deceive.

Healthcare
Support Ensuring easy access to birth control pills (House: On Floor 2nd Reading)
DEADLINE: Mar 12 • 5:00pm
Support HB 1090 to ensure easy access to birth control pills

Stop the Dismantling of the United States Postal Service

From our friends at Chop Wood, Carry Water

The jobs of 640,000 U.S. Postal Service (USPS) employees are under attack. In a reported executive order, President Trump plans to fire the Postal Board of Governors and place the agency under the control of the Department of Commerce.

This is a direct attack on USPS employees, the unmatched universal service they provide and every citizen who relies on the Postal Service.
Please stand with letter carriers and all postal workers and make a call to your member of Congress.

Action: Call your member of Congress.
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 if voicemail is full, call any regional office or email Contact Form

Script: My name is (NAME), a constituent of the Congress Member. I live in (CITY) and my zip code is (ZIP). I depend on the United States Postal Service. I’m extremely upset that Trump is planning to seize control of the US Postal and fire its leadership, placing it under the Commerce Department. I want the Congress member to do whatever’s necessary to ensure that the Postal Service remains independent and in the hands of the people.

Update: Tumwater School District Bans Trans Girls from Girls’ Teams

Sign saying Trans & GNC Youth, We love you, We see you, We stand with you.
Source: Ted Eyten, flickr
On Thursday, in an urgent alert Olympia Indivisible informed its members about the Tumwater School Board’s upcoming vote on a resolution banning transgender girls from girls’ team sports. That very night, after hearing multiple public comments uniformly opposing the ban, a carefully detailed argument against it from Board President Melissa Beard, and brief statements opposing it from the three School Board student representatives, the Board nonetheless voted to pass it, three to one, with one abstention.

Tumwater has now taken the lead in South Puget Sound transphobia: in its public schools, trans girls don’t get to take the field with their friends, or even sit on the bench.

Big thanks to OI members who showed up and spoke, to the student representatives, and to Board President Melissa Beard, who spoke truth to power.

Action 1: Thank Melissa Beard for voting against the resolution: [email protected],
Script (feel free to enlarge): Thank you for speaking up for trans girls and staying on the right side of history.

Action 2: Rebuke the rest:
Jill Adams (abstained but spoke in favor): [email protected]
Darby Kaikonnen (voted in favor), [email protected]
Ty Kuehl (voted in favor), [email protected]
Casey Taylor (voted in favor), [email protected]
Script (feel free to enlarge): Your craven failure to protect vulnerable trans girls will follow you out of office.

Action 3: (for Tumwater residents): Four Board members are up for re-election this year: Jill Adams (District 1), Ty Kuehl (District 3), Darby Kaikkonen (District 5), and Melissa Beard (District 4). All are currently unopposed. If you’re a Tumwater resident of Districts 1, 3, or 5, consider running; if not, watch this space.

Rally at Marilyn Strickland’s Lacey Office

On February 18, over 115 OI Members gathered peacefully at Rep. Strickland’s Lacey office to express alarm about the dismantling of democracy and to deliver to the Representative a letter urging her to respond with courageous leadership and unflinching, outspoken opposition in defense of our freedoms and civil liberties. We got frontpage coverage in The Olympian for this event, and our Members of Congress team are at work right now to get Strickland to schedule a Town Hall during the March Congressional recess. Read the letter on our website.

Lawsuits Against Trump's Regime
Public Citizen has filed seven lawsuits against the regime since Trump took the oath of office on January 20 for the second time. In fact, they filed the first of those lawsuits within moments of Trump being sworn in. Here’s a recap of what each lawsuit is about, what progress they’ve already made, and what comes next.

Aid Trucks Cross into Gaza
More than 10,000 aid trucks have entered Gaza since the ceasefire began. With more than half a million people returning to northern Gaza since the ceasefire began, the need for food, tents, and life-saving medicine is immense (this video makes clear the level of devastation). Across Gaza, 22 bakeries supported by the World Food Programme are now operational and nutrient supplements are being provided to more than 80,000 women and children.
