Weekly Call To Action - March 13, 2022

3/13/2022

Quote of the Week:

“It can be overwhelming to witness/experience/take in all the injustices of the moment; the good news is that they’re all connected. So if your little corner of work involves pulling at one of the threads, you’re helping to unravel the whole damn cloth.” – Ursula Wolfe-Rocca

All-Member Meeting: Winning Elections, Protecting Democracy, Saturday, March 26, 11:00 AM-Noon  Register Here Now

Take Three Actions Now:

Insist on a Special Prosecutor to Investigate Former President Trump Before It Is Too Late

Picture
The time has come for Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate Donald Trump. That step offers the best way to reassure the country that no one is above the law, justice is nonpartisan and fears of political fallout will not determine the decision on whether to bring charges.

Here’s why:
  • This is the best way to remove politics from the investigation.
  • This is the only way to ensure the investigation is not stopped by a new Republican Congress or administration.
  • New evidence makes it clear there is abundant reason to investigate and understand former President Trump’s involvement in an unprecedented  conspiracy to interfere with Congress and the counting of electoral votes.

Background
Opinion: Attorney General Merrick Garland should appoint a special counsel to investigate Trump

Action 1: Contact our Members of Congress.

Option A: Contact your representatives by telephone or email.

  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: My name is_____ and my zip code is _____. I am asking (Senator/Congresswoman_____) to call for Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate if former President Trump illegally schemed to stop the lawful transfer of power to President Joe Biden.

There is now ample evidence to raise this concern. Congress’ policy since 1999 authorizes the Attorney General to appoint a special counsel in exactly these kinds of extraordinary circumstances. This is the only way to take politics out of the investigation and to ensure it is completed even with a new administration or Congress. No one should be allowed to be above the law.

Act Now to Help Ukraine with Desperately Needed Humanitarian Supplies

Action 2: Take a few minutes and listen to this heartfelt NPR interview telling how volunteers have sprung into action to effectively move supplies into Ukraine.

Then consider helping. Here is one way. The United Nations Relief Agency is doing crucial work.

Support Affordable Homeownership

Picture

Deadline: Tuesday, March 15th

The City of Olympia has a city-owned 10-acre property at 3900 Boulevard Road that they want to develop to meet housing needs. The city recently solicited interest from qualified developers with an established track record of delivering high-quality and affordable housing. Here is the link to the city website about the property and here is a link to an article summarizing all of the proposals the city received.

The Habitat for Humanity proposal is the only one that supports homeownership and it also will offer the highest number of affordable units, down to 30% of the area median income.

Action 3: Email comments to Olympia City Government. Please add your own thoughts for a more personal request.

Option A: By Tuesday, March 15th, send an email to City Manager Jay Burney (jburney@cci.olympia.wa.us ) and Economic Development Director Mike Reid (mreid@ci.olympia.wa.us) with a cc to the City Council (citycouncil@ci.olympia.wa.us ) and CEO of the South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity (carly@spshabitat.org )

Subject: 3900 Boulevard

Script: Please approve the South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity's housing proposal for the city-owned site at 3900 Boulevard Road. This proposal supports homeownership and it offers the highest number of affordable units, down to 30% of the area median income.

Sincerely,

[NAME] [CITY],  [ZIP]
