Tell Your Member of Congress: No War with Iran

The American people don’t want war. Polls show that across the political spectrum, Americans overwhelmingly support diplomacy over war with Iran.
  • A 2023 Chicago Council on Global Affairs survey found that 83% of Americans overall support diplomacy over military action to stop Iran from enriching the uranium needed for nuclear weapons, including 80% of Republicans, 82% of Independents, and 88% of Democrats.
  • A Data for Progress poll from 2022 similarly found that 78% of Americans overall favor diplomacy over war in Iran, including 72% of Republicans, 79% of Independents, and 83% of Democrats.
Despite this clear public consensus, Trump and his advisers continue to suggest military escalation -- risking a major international crisis, massive civilian casualties, and even a potentially nuclear-armed confrontation.

Action: Tell Your Member of Congress: No War with Iran
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Rep. Marilyn Strickland, Phone: ‭(202) 225-9740‬ or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: I am a constituent of yours at zip code _______. The American people don’t want war with Iran. Polls show that across the political spectrum. Despite this clear public consensus, Trump and his advisers continue to suggest military escalation -- risking a major international crisis, massive civilian casualties, and even a potentially nuclear-armed confrontation.

Please do anything you can to stop this.

Push Back at Senate’s Proposed Medicaid Cuts

  • Joined by Constituents Who Rely on Medicaid and SNAP, Senator Murray Slams Republicans’ “Big Ugly Betrayal” for Gigantic Cuts to Programs That Washingtonians Depend on to Meet Basic Needs
  • Senate Republicans' changes to 'big beautiful bill' tee up clash with House | Iowa Public Radio

The massive Senate reconciliation budget bill came out of committee this week. It is even harsher than the House bill.

It has more tax cuts for the wealthy, including a number of business breaks and cessation of the inheritance tax for rich people whose estates total more than 15 million. And of course, it reauthorizes lower taxes for high earners,  to the tune of on average at least $12,000 less in taxes per year, while the lowest earners will have to pay about $1,600 more per year.

Many Americans feel the worst aspect of the Senate bill is that it strips $900 billion from Medicaid funding. It also reduces additional federal Medicaid matching funds paid for rural hospital and nursing home care. Polls show that 60% of Americans support Medicaid.  A few Republican Senators have spoken out against the cuts.

Action 1: Join Indivisible National for phone banks June 23-26 to connect at-risk Medicaid recipients directly with their GOP Senators.

Action 2: Give our Senators real stories about what will happen to those of us on Medicaid or to relatives or friends who rely on Medicaid if the proposed Senate cuts are enacted:

Stop the Sell-Off of 250+ Million Acres of Public Land

Picture
Photo by Ronan Craft, altered by John Kelly
From the Wilderness Society

The “One Big Beautiful Bill” now before the Senate includes extraordinary giveaways aimed at privatizing public lands in Washington and other Western states – plus mandated oil lease sales in the Arctic Refuge, construction of a mining road through a national park, and more than twice as much logging as we have now. At least two million acres of Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands in eleven Western states would have to be sold over the next five years, including local recreation areas, roadless areas preserved for land conservation, wildlife habitat and migration corridors, and wilderness study areas.  In Washington, more than 5 million acres – 12.6% of our state’s land area – would be up for sale.

But it’s not all bad news. According to the Senate’s fact sheet, the bill will reduce the national deficit by $5-$10 billion over the next 10 years – i.e., by about 0.5%. If all goes according to plan.

Action: Urge your senators to oppose this brazen giveaway of irreplaceable public lands.
  • Senator Patty Murray, Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Contact Form
    • Send to both: democracy.io

Script: As a Washington resident who values our wild lands and wildlife, I urge you to oppose the reconciliation bill now under consideration. It would force the sale of irreplaceable public lands for private profit. The public gets nothing in return but an infinitesimal reduction of the national deficit. There are many ways to reduce the deficit; there’s no way to restore despoiled lands.

Tell Our Electeds: Farmers and Fisherman Need NOAA

Hurricane-Like Storm

From our friends at Indivisible Bellingham

Background: Farmers, meteorologists fear forecast gaps as Trump-era layoffs hit NOAA

The current GOP budget proposal cuts funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to the tune of $1.7 billion, 27% of its entire budget. From daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, and climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration and supporting marine commerce, NOAA’s products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America’s gross domestic product.

Action: Let our representatives know we need NOAA more than we needed a military parade, or tax cuts for billionaires!

Script: (NOTE: Keep it short and sweet. Use the talking points below and/or be sure to add any personal story about why NOAA funding is critical to your livelihood and family.)  My name is ____________ and I live in    (zip code)    . I need you to stand strong against cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the GOP budget. We all want the government’s budget to support our everyday lives without causing more debt and raising everyday prices. The cuts amount to $1.7 billion or 27% of their entire budget.
  • NOAA’s services support over $1.3 trillion in economic activity annually.
  • Farmers use NOAA data to optimize planting, irrigation, and harvest decisions, especially in drought-prone areas.
  • Fishermen depend on NOAA’s ocean condition forecasts and fisheries assessments to ensure safe, sustainable harvests.
  • Cutting NOAA would disrupt the planning tools that stabilize commodity markets and food supply chains.

Please fight for these important services that impact so many lives.

When neighbors and their children are being detained at work or coming home from school, our community must urgently begin to prepare, inform, and organize so that there are groups that can document any immigration enforcement activity in our area.

The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN) is the largest immigrant justice network in Washington. It convenes and cultivates a statewide transnational solidarity coalition to protect and advance the power and rights of all immigrant and refugee communities.

They are offering a rapid response Zoom workshop on Thursday, June 26 at 6pm.

Action: Register for this workshop to learn more about existing rapid response networks that support communities.

Columbia protester Mahmoud Khalil freed from ICE detention
Former Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil was freed from detention on Friday after a federal judge ordered his release, ruling that the government’s efforts to keep him in custody were highly unusual and potentially a form of punishment for his political views. OI had been advocating with our elected representatives for weeks, asking for his release. Thank you for doing your part!
