Weekly Call To Action - June 16, 2024

6/15/2024

Quote of the Week:

“The Supreme Court’s (SCOTUS) ruling was simply that the plaintiffs did not have standing to bring this case. Not only does that not rule out future legal attacks on mifepristone, this is exactly the way MAGA justices explicitly keep the door open for another case to be brought forward in a manner that allows them to rip away our freedoms.” – Indivisible National Team, June 13, 2024

Campaigns, Get Active

Now’s the time to support our candidates! Starting this week, Call to Action is going to give you a shortcut to do this. Take a look at our

The next two weeks include:

You can party, you can make signs, you can write postcards!

Federal Actions:

Support the PRESS Act

From our friends at the ACLU

Earlier this year, the US House unanimously passed the PRESS Act, a bill which would prevent the government from compelling journalists to disclose their sources or records created as part of their reporting, except in extreme cases.

Unfortunately, despite bipartisan support in the House, the PRESS Act has not yet received a vote in the Senate.

Background
  • The PRESS Act would ensure a free and fair media

Action: Click HERE to tell the Senate: Pass the PRESS Act and protect journalists’ ability to do their jobs.

Constrain UGA Land Swaps

Prevent sprawl, encroachment of our rural areas, and reduction of aquifer protections.

We must prevent the new land use tool—the Urban Growth Area (UGA) swap law—from causing urbanization to overtake Thurston rural areas, forestland, and farmland and from reducing protections for our aquifers.

Background
Development would destroy forestland

Action:
  • Click on the comment survey from the Thurston 2045 Comprehensive Plan Update Project. Fill out the personal information and then click the checkbox for Land Use. Leave the organization box blank.

  • Copy and paste the following comment into the comment survey above:

Policy: UGA swaps allowed by laws passed in 2022 and 2024 must result in no net loss of rural or natural resource lands and no net loss in protections for critical aquifer recharge areas. It is not enough to say there will be no net increase in total UGA acreage. Write a policy that prevents urbanization of our rural and natural resource lands and of our highest priority critical aquifer recharge areas. We must not create new mini-cities in rural areas by misusing the new tool of UGA swaps.

Your Work Pays Off:

Gun Buyers Background Checks
The Biden White House is issuing a rule designed to close a gap that allows gun buyers to avoid background checks. This rule puts an end to the “gun show loophole,” one of the most significant steps to crack down on unlicensed dealers in decades.

The new rule is the first of its kind in 30 years. It will require thousands of firearm dealers to get licensed and perform background checks, dealers who sell guns at gun shows, flea markets, social media or other places outside of brick-and-mortar stores.Your advocacy helped score this win. Thank you.

Biden Protects 13 Million Acres of Alaska Wilderness
A story in E&E News reports that the Interior Department has set “maximum protections” on roughly 13 million acres of the 23-million-acre National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska, and blocked construction of the proposed 211-mile Ambler Road through the Alaska wilderness.

Oil and mining companies aren’t happy, of course. Nor is Alaska’s Congressional delegation. GOP Senator Dan Sullivan aims to fight the decisions, and says the best way to reverse them would be to put the GOP in control of Congress and the White House. Thank you, and make a note of Senator Sullivan’s helpful hint!
