Quote of the Week:“People often say I’m not interested in politics. They might as well say, I’m not interested in my standard of living, my health, my job, my rights, my freedoms, my future or any future. If we mean to keep any control over our world and lives, we must be interested in politics. –Martha Gellhorn, American writer and journalist Campaigns, Get Active:Now’s the time to support our candidates! Starting this week, Call to Action is going to give you a shortcut to do this. Take a look at our Campaign Support Hot List. Pick. One.Thing. And do it! The next two weeks include:
You can party, you can make signs, you can write postcards! The important thing is that you DO SOMETHING! So let’s do it! Federal Actions:Use This Moment To Build Momentum Toward Court Expansion Photo Source: SCOTUS via Wikimedia Commons Here’s the cold, hard truth: We don’t control the House or have the votes to abolish the filibuster (yet!), so court expansion won’t happen before the election. But we need to use moments like this to grow support for these essential reforms. Right now, senators’ phones should be ringing off the hooks with demands for expansion. Let’s get them on the record supporting solutions that match the scale of the emergency we’re in. Democrats don’t control the House, so once again, we’re playing the long game. And this isn’t just about building support in the House -- this is about getting Democrats to demonstrate to voters that they are willing to fight to protect their rights and save our democracy. Action 1: Tell your Democratic senators to co-sponsor the Judiciary Act, which calls for adding four seats to the Supreme Court. Action 2: Urge your Democratic representative to co-sponsor the Judiciary Act and sign onto the House Court Reform Task Force to signal their commitment to restoring legitimacy to the Court. Urge the US Dept. of Justice to Investigate Big OilPhoto Source: Wikimedia Commons From our Friends at Mother Jones and the Union of Concerned Scientists At a recent Senate Budget Committee hearing on Big Oil's denial, disinformation, and doublespeak, evidence of the fossil fuel industry's harmful climate deception only continued to grow. The fossil fuel industry has known for decades that their products are dangerous to a stable climate and human wellbeing; yet they continue to lie, deceive, and delay meaningful action. We need action at the highest levels of government to hold this powerful industry accountable for the harm it has caused to people and the planet. Given the immense harm that this industry has already caused and the rapidly worsening climate crisis, the Department of Justice (DOJ) must act urgently to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable, and force it to change its business practices and make restitution for the damage it has caused. It's time for the DOJ to look into the significant evidence of deceptive behavior from Big Oil. Action: Urge Attorney General Merrick Garland to launch an investigation into the fossil fuel industry's coordinated effort to mislead the public and policymakers, just like it did with Big Tobacco. Tell Congress: America Elects Presidents, Not Kings Photo Source: OI member via Glimpse The Supreme Court has just declared that criminal law doesn't apply when you're president, using the powers of the office. Presidents who use their official powers to commit crimes are now immune from criminal accountability – even after they leave office. That means a president could commit atrocities in office – turning the Armed Forces against political opponents, using the Justice Department to investigate or prosecute critics, or worse. As long as their actions are "official," they'll be immune from criminal prosecution. We cannot let this ruling stand – so we're calling on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment overturning it. Action: Tell Congress: Pass a constitutional amendment restoring presidential liability – because those who criminally abuse the office must be held accountable. We elect presidents, NOT kings. Register HERE. Your Work Pays Off: Starbucks at the Bargaining Table
For the past three years, Starbucks workers have been campaigning to unionize, swimming upstream against the company, whose former CEO portrayed them as outside agitators. Olympia Indivisible members have stood with these brave workers here in Olympia and Tumwater on the picket line, supplying them with hot food and drink during winter strike days, petitioned their CEO to stop their dirty tricks anti-union tactics, and offering thanks and flowers to union shop baristas on Starbucks Workers Ally Days. Now the company and the union, which represents more than 400 of Starbucks’s 10,000 U.S. stores, appear to be on track for a contract that will cover wages, benefits and disciplinary policies. This milestone, if achieved, will signal to other food service workers (an industry that is notoriously nonunion) that unionizing, even with a company that drags its feet on getting to the bargaining table, is worth the effort.
