Weekly Call To Action - July 18, 2021

7/18/2021

Take Three Actions Now:

Filibuster Potluck
Picture

Don’t let the bold move by the Texas Democrats go to waste. Choose your favorite dish to serve to our members of congress.

Action(s) 1: Our Senators need to focus on finding a solution to the filibuster in order to pass “For the People Act” (S.1) and every other critical bill. Here are three easy, fun, recipes for political action.  Choose your favorite.
  • Ask Senators Murray and Cantwell to meet with the Texas Democrats and post publicly about it, including what they learn from the meeting.

Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
Email both your MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

  • For our Tweeters: Every time Patty or Maria tweet about some policy they are wanting to advance, quote tweet back a copy of their tweet with a #FILIBUSTERED heading.

  • Cardboard Senator Selfie Day: On Thursday, July 22, come to Lisa’s between 9am and 2pm and take a “selfie” flanked by cardboard Senators Maria and Patty with a message to find a solution to the filibuster to get S.1 passed. We’ll send this on to our Senators! Coffee, tea, and appreciation on hand.  RSVP here.

OI Members to the Rescue -
Thurston County Democrats Send Out an Urgent Plea for Lit Drop Volunteers
Picture
Campaign Central
1014 Fourth Ave., East
Local elections are here, ballots have just gone out and votes must be in by August 3. We all know the critical importance of local elections, protecting democracy and implementing the progressive agenda starts at the local level. We also know that motivating folks to vote in off elections is the biggest political hurdle we face, and that personal outreach to likely voters is the best tool for increasing turnout. Literature drops work for winning local elections.

The problem is that there is a shortage of volunteers to do LitDrops for this election. Thurston County Democrats have asked for help; this is our opportunity to show the power of OI! Distributing each packet takes one-two hours, we can all find at least that much time, right? And remember, these go to voters who are likely to be supportive of the candidates that OI has endorsed, so it’s a great opportunity for outreach to like-minded neighbors

Action 2: Starting this Friday, July 16, and continuing every day until the primary, packets of literature for some of our candidates will be available at our Lit Drop (and other campaign activities) center (see above for location) from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day. You can choose your favorite candidate, or distribute for a candidate that needs that extra bit of help.  These candidates have packets ready to go, others may be added soon:
  • Lisa Parshley (Olympia City Council)
  • Jim Cooper (Olympia City Council)
  • Yến Huỳnh (Olympia City Council)
  • Joel Hansen (Port Commission)
  • Dontae Payne (Olympia City Council)
  • Angela Jefferson (Tumwater City Council)

The process is really simple, and starts with downloading a phone app called MiniVAN to your phone. MiniVan provides you with house by house walking directions for your packet. You can place the literature packets on doorsteps, or knock on doors if you like talking about your candidate. There will be on-site trainers at the pickup location to be sure you are comfortable with the app and know how to use it.

See you there. This is how we can still make a difference, right now, by just showing up, and doing our part in local elections. It matters.

What is the Big Rush? The Port and County Should Redistrict at the Same Time.
Picture

Here is a good government, common sense suggestion put forward by Thurston County Commissioner Tye Menser, one of two OI supported Commissioners. Tye suggests that the Port Commission consider an alternative to their “go it alone” approach, and combine their upcoming political restructuring with similar efforts by the County.

Currently, Port commissioners Bill McGregor and Joe Downing appear set to vote on a resolution — and that vote likely will take place July 26 — that would send a ballot proposition to the county for the November 2021 general election, asking voters whether to expand the commission to five members from three.

At essentially the same time, the Thurston County Commission is committed to putting an expanded county commission before the voters in 2022. Tye sees this as an opportunity to improve governance, reduce voter confusion and cut costs. Here are the 3 things Tye Menser asked of the Port of Olympia commission before it expands
  • The port and county run their ballot measures at the same time, not only to lower election costs, but also to educate the public and raise awareness, giving both ballot measures the best chance for voter approval.
  •  If the port intends to move forward, he asked that the port and county collaborate on the new district boundaries.
  • Delay port elections until 2023 to allow “adequate time for good sensible boundaries and allow solid qualified candidates to assess the changes.” The port is currently considering a mid-May candidate filing deadline, only weeks after getting the new district boundaries to the county by March 22, an “extremely aggressive timeline.”

Your message will have more impact if all messages are not the same.  If you can, please modify the script to add your own words and talking points.

Action 3: Email the Port Commissioners and ask them why they won’t work with the County Commission and redistrict in 2022.

To Thurston Port Commissioners: Joe Downing, Bill McGregor, and E.J. Zita
joed@portolympia.com, billm@portolympia.com, ejz@portolympia.com

Script: My name is ___________. I am a member of Olympia Indivisible, from [CITY],[ZIP] and I am asking you to please join Thurston County in the 2022 ballot measure asking the voters to approve moving from 3 to 5 commissioners. Going it alone in 2021 will add an unnecessary burden to the taxpayer for election costs. Keep the Port and County districts in sync. There is no apparent reason for the Port to rush this decision.

Have you scheduled these events?

Last Call: Drinks and Democracy Happy Hour
Picture
Don’t miss it! It’s the last Drinks and Democracy Happy Hour of the summer.

What: Drinks and Democracy Happy Hour
Where: Lisa’s cozy back patio
When: Saturday, July 24th, 5:00 to 6:15 PM

Come raise a glass, catch up with your fellow Indivisiblers, and learn the latest. We will be offering the Good Trouble cocktail, and we will also repeat the Paper Ballot cocktail again due to popular demand. It has been fun meeting and talking with OI members, and experimenting with these tantalizing drinks. We will be sure to do it again because democracy and drinks never go out of fashion.

For details and address to the event, RSVP here. Even if you have been here before, please RSVP.

To celebrate being able to see other Olympia Indivisible members in person again and another year of effective political action in spite of the pandemic, OI invites you to a family-friendly outdoor picnic.   We’ve been through a hard year, let’s enjoy each other’s company. This is a BYO (bring your own food, drinks, utensils, plates, cups, napkins, etc) event, keeping it simple, low-tech, family-friendly, and environmentally friendly.

There's plenty of on-site parking and public transport available.

Our afternoon program will have some uplifting news and views from always entertaining OI Steering Committee member Rory Summerson.
And there will be music! We can listen to Olympia's own Vince Brown.
Picture
And there will be treats provided by Olympia Indivisible from Sofie’s Scoops Gelateria ! They are a downtown Olympia small business; if you haven’t tried their gelato yet, you’ve been missing out on really great gelato.
