Quote of the Week:People often say that, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote – a very different thing. --Walter Judd Help Our Candidates Win!Now’s the time to support our candidates! Go to our OI Campaign Support Calendar. Pick. One.Thing. And do it! The next two weeks include:
You can party, you can make signs, you can write postcards! The important thing is that you DO SOMETHING! So let’s do it! Federal Actions: Protect The Dignity and Property Rights of Unhoused People Photo Source: Wikimedia Commons Source: Americans of Conscience, National Alliance to End Homelessness Action: Contact your members of Congress with the NAEH form (uncheck the “Yes, sign me up for email updates” box). Script: Hello, I’m contacting you because I’m concerned that the Supreme Court’s decision upholding an anti-camping law will encourage cities in our state to penalize unhoused people, resulting in the loss of property, documents, and treasured mementos. Ending homelessness requires affordable housing and support services, not punitive measures. Please add your name to this NAEH letter urging the president to enact policies that reduce initiatives to criminalize homelessness. Elect the President By Popular Vote Source: Americans of Conscience Checklist, League of Women Voters, National Popular Vote Five times in U.S. history (including twice since 2000), the candidate who received the most votes didn’t win the presidency. Although Congress passed much-needed legislation in 2022 to clarify the process of appointing electors and certifying their votes, the Electoral College still misrepresents voters in every state. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) would ensure that the Electoral College would abide by the results of the popular vote. Action: Send an email to your Members of Congress to continue to support the existing president by popular vote. Script: Washington should be on the campaign trail in presidential elections. But because of the current electoral college system, we are ignored. Moreover, the candidate with the most votes nationwide should become President. Washington has already passed the National Popular Vote law. Although some want this repealed, I hope you will support the existing National Popular Vote. It’s already passed a number of states, and will take effect when states with a majority of the electoral votes pass it. Best wishes Bonus Action: Share information from the League of Women Voters’ One Person, One Vote toolkit on social media. Have You Scheduled These Events? Heather Cox Richardson Talks Project 2025Photo Source: Peter Stevents via Wikimedia Commons From our friends at Red Wine and Blue Project 2025 already has $100 million and 5,000 government-ready workers behind it. It is the future of the Republican party and outlines their entire platform. The president of the Heritage Foundation – the organization funding the Project 2025 effort – said last week that we are in the “midst of a second American Revolution” and threatened violence. We need to talk not only about what Project 2025 will do – from destroying the civil rights of people of color and the LGBTQ community to turning our country toward Christian Nationalism – but also how we can stop it. History has given us a roadmap for stopping Project 2025, and historian Heather Cox Richardson is going to tell us just what we need to do! So much is at stake right now, and you don’t want to miss this amazing opportunity to make a difference. Action: Join us next Monday, July 15, at 4:00PM PT to hear from Heather all about Project 2025 and how the policies in it would change the nation as we know it. Drinks and Democracy is Back!
