Quote of the Week:“We cannot be mesmerized by the worst things that we see happening. We will be inclined to react with shock by some things that are done precisely with the intent of shocking us, we need to move very quickly through the shock.” - Pete Buttigieg, 11/21/2024 Get Out on the Streets:Image Source: zaya odeesho on Unsplash Want the scoop on upcoming rallies, marches, and related events? Visit OI’s Rallies, Marches, Town Halls and Boycotts webpage! Indivisible National Actions Americans oppose war with Venezuela, by overwhelming numbers (more than 70%). They understand that attacking and threatening to “control” Venezuela doesn’t make their lives better or enhance our national security. On Thursday, the Senate fired a warning shot at Trump, voting to advance a bipartisan resolution to block him from using military force “within or against Venezuela” unless he gets prior approval from Congress. Now all of us need to raise our voices today and urge that our senators vote for the War Powers Resolution. Action: Tell our senators to do their duty under the Constitution they swore to uphold and stop this unauthorized, immoral, illegal assault on the nation of Venezuela. When you call, thank Senator Murray for her outspoken leadership on this issue. Indivisible National also urged us to mobilize and take part in Ice Out for Good! events this weekend to protest and mourn the lives ICE has taken and destroyed. There’s a Sunday, January 11th event in Centralia. See our Rallies and Marches webpage for all the events in our region and actions you can take in the days and weeks to come. Federal Actions:Stop Trump from Taking Over GreenlandImage Source: NASA via Wikimedia Background:
Trump launched his attack on Venezuela on January 3, capturing President Nicolás Maduro. He says he’s going to “run” Venezuela for a while and then personally control the country’s huge oil reserves. He’s been emboldened to talk about spreading his imperial ambitions to other Western Hemisphere countries, like Columbia, Cuba, Mexico, and Canada – and most frequently, to Greenland. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, which is part of NATO. All NATO countries are strongly opposed and say that if Trump invades, it would functionally be the end of NATO, since the US is an ally and member. Polls indicate 85% of Greenlanders oppose a US takeover. But that hasn’t stopped Trump. He’s sending Secretary of State Marco Rubio to meet with Greenland’s government next week. It’s apparent Trump will continue his invasive ambitions until bipartisan Congressional action stops him — and that looks possible: the Senate passed a measure to advance a War Powers resolution last Thursday, requiring him to terminate hostilities against Venezuela without authorization from Congress. Should say: This action shows the momentum building in Congress. Action: Urge our MOCs to actively pursue both War Powers Resolutions and other legislation that will take advantage of the growing momentum against Trump’s plans to attack sovereign nations.
Suggested Script: Congress must act now to stop President Trump from attacking sovereign nations without Congressional authorization. He is now threatening to invade a second country in less than a month. His reckless actions are harming both the US and the rest of the world. Please join Senators Murkowski, Thune, Tillis, Moran, Paul, Kennedy, McConnell, Curtis, Gallego, and Collins, and Representatives Bacon, Moore, and Massie in their efforts to stop him. In addition to a War Powers Resolution, please consider a defense budget amendment similar to Sen. Gallego’s prohibiting the use of defense funds against Greenland. Tell Congress: No Immunity for ICE ThugsImage Source: Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash Background:
The fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good on Wednesday by an ICE agent has spurred Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Dan Goldman (D-NY) to draft a bill stripping ICE agents of their qualified immunity from prosecution. Macklin Good was shot at close range while driving her car after dropping her six-year-old son off at school in Minneapolis. Videos of the incident do not show Macklin Good presenting any sort of aggressive behavior. “I just can’t be more clear that she posed absolutely no threat at all,” an eyewitness told Minnesota Public Radio. Macklin Good’s killer will probably get away with it; federal civil enforcement officers like ICE agents have broad legal protection when carrying out their official duties. Current law requires only that an officer fear for his life, whether the fear is founded in reality or not. The ICE OUT Act would replace that meaningless subjective standard with an objective “reasonable person” standard. Action: Contact your Representative
Script: I am horrified by the needless killing of Nicole Renee Macklin Good in Minneapolis by an ICE agent and discouraged to know that the agent will probably never be prosecuted for recklessly shooting this mother of three. Please co-sponsor Dan Goldman and Eric Swalwell’s ICE OUT Act and do all you can to make ICE agents face responsibility for their actions. Have You Scheduled These Events? The Department of Homeland Security needed to show that the hazards from these disasters had been ameliorated before ending TPS, but, as the ruling says, “the record specifically reflects that, before taking office, the Secretary made a pre-ordained decision to end TPS and influenced the conditions review process to facilitate TPS terminations." The judge found the administration’s attempt “preordained and pretextual rather than based on an objective review of the country conditions” and voided it.
