Weekly Call To Action - December 5, 2021

12/5/2021

Take Three Actions Now:

Advocate for Affordable Housing for Low-Income Seniors in Thurston County

Picture

The Port of Olympia Commission has been stalling the Housing Authority of Thurston County’s effort to buy a hotel that’s on Port property and turn it into housing for low-income seniors for nearly a year. When even the editorial board of The Olympian is fed up enough to write an editorial about the Port's shilly-shallying, you KNOW we just might have some traction!

The Port meets tomorrow, December 6th.

Action 1: Submit your comment to the Port Commissioners by NOON TOMORROW (Monday, December 6)

Option A: Email the Port of Olympia Commissioners. All written comments will be compiled and sent to the Commissioners prior to the meeting.

Sample Message (please personalize, tell a story): My name is _______ and I live in Thurston County. I want the Port Commission to stop stalling on seeking an FAA exemption to allow the Housing Authority of Thurston County’s effort to buy a hotel that’s on Port property and turn it into housing for low-income seniors.

Talking points:
  • The Port received specific instructions from the FAA on June 29 detailing how to seek an exemption that would allow the sale to advance. But despite six months of campaigning by Ro and Chance, as well as significant public comment sent to the Port following an Oct. 25 article in The Olympian, the Port has not taken action. • Washington has seen a 49% increase in the median rent in the past five years, but only a 4.4% increase in median household income in the same period. [source: League of Women Voters Washington]
  • The 2021 Fair Market Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in metro Thurston County is $1,026. (Fair Market Rent is the rent amount, including utilities (except telephone), to rent privately owned, existing, decent, safe and sanitary rental housing of modest (non-luxury) nature with suitable amenities.) How Did These People Get Elected?

Picture
Gerrymandering increases radicalization.

In a working democracy, representatives are chosen after competing in a fair election. When gerrymandering districts is allowed, there is no longer competition. Since one party (usually Republican) is guaranteed to win, the only competition left is among Republicans that grab the most headlines. It is no accident that the GOP is becoming more and more radicalized and that intimidation, bullying, and election subversion are becoming the norm.

Will you help fix this? Will you say no to the radicals that are destroying our country? Passage of the Freedom to Vote Act in the Senate will end gerrymandering and help give voters a fair chance to elect qualified candidates that represent a diversity of voters.

Action 2: Contact our Senators.

Option A: Contact your representatives by telephone or email.

  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
    • Email both your MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: My name is _____________. As a member of Olympia Indivisible and a concerned citizen I am reminding Senator ________that gerrymandering is creating a radicalized Republican party that uses threats and violence to get their way. Pass the Freedom to Vote Act to end gerrymandering and return accountability to our elections. Democracy needs competition and fairness to survive.

Protect Women’s Rights to Choose

During oral arguments concerning a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, the conservative judges (who are in the majority) signaled that they were comfortable with the law and potentially with reversing Roe v Wade altogether. The court's decision is not expected for several months, but the Justices' statements underline the immediate need for legislative protection of women's rights.

We must pass the Women's Health Protection Act, and to do that we must do away with the filibuster. Call your Senators and add this to the list of reasons why they must take action and fix the Senate by cancelling the filibuster.

Action 3: Tell your senators to remove the filibuster to protect women's rights.

Script: Hi, my name is ________ and I am calling/writing from zip code ______. The stench from the Supreme Court this week signaled a willingness to curtail or perhaps even reverse Roe v Wade. Women's rights are hanging by a thread. We need legislative protections like the Women's Health Protection Act. This, as well as many other crucial bills, are impossible to pass due to the filibuster, so I am asking Senator ________ to do everything she can to get rid of the filibuster so we can get something done and not throw court precedence in the dustbin. Thanks.

Defend democracy by helping pass progressive legislation!

The 2022 Washington Legislative session (Jan. 10-Mar. 10) will be short, but impactful. YOU can help get progressive legislation across the finish line. Our 60-minute Take Action Network Zoom Training Session is your key to success!

Take Action Network (TAN) is a platform developed to help Washington progressive citizen activists like you to easily and quickly take actions on important legislative bills, be informed of local meetings and town halls, and follow what is happening on important issues throughout the year.

When you join TAN and set up your personal profile, you will be notified ONLY when there are bills on issues you care about, and only when taking action can actually influence your elected officials.

TAN will provide telephone and email scripts that automatically connect you with the right phone numbers and addresses. It’s easy-to-do, one-stop shopping that allows you, with a clear conscience, to turn off that fire hose of requests for action which are probably clogging up your email right now, and instead be a strategic advocacy superhero with the ease of one-click bill pay.

Action: Register for either Friday, December 10 or Friday the 17th at 7pm. In just one hour, we’ll get you signed up and help personalize your profile, so you are ready to take action in the 2022 legislative session.
