Weekly Call To Action - August 8, 2021

8/8/2021

Take Two Actions Now:

Protect Voting Rights

Picture

Action 1: Call Senators again and again with this simple message: Don’t let Infrastructure or the Filibuster get in the way of passing the “For the People Act”. This is our last chance to stop gerrymandering before it is too late.
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
    • Email both your MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script:  “My name is [NAME] and I live in [CITY, ZIP]. It is critical to pass S.1, the “For the People Act”. We must abolish or change the filibuster rules to act now! If you don’t protect voting rights now, you are handing all our power over to the Republicans. Thank you.”

USPS Trump Appointee Postmaster General Dejoy’s Corruption Out in the Open

Picture

According to the Seattle Times and other leading papers, “the U.S. Postal Service will pay $120 million over the next five years to a major logistics contractor that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy previously helped lead and with which his family maintains financial ties, according to DeJoy’s financial disclosure statements….The leases could generate up to $23.7 million in rent payments for the DeJoy businesses over the next decade, according to a person who shared details of the agreements with The Washington Post.”

In September of 2020 the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, ethics and campaign finance law experts warned of the severity of DeJoy’s campaign finance violations and agreed that his conflicts of interest should have disqualified him from consideration for Postmaster General. Now he openly flaunts his corruption

Action 2A: Contact our Senators
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
    • Email both your MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script:
my name is ______ and I’m a member of OI. I am calling to demand that Senator ____ lobby President Biden to replace the interim Postal Board member Ron Bloom, a Trump appointee, with a qualified nominee who believes in the US Postal Service mission, to “serve the American people and … bind our nation together”. This will enable the Board to then vote to remove DeJoy as PMG and replace him with an honest and competent leader.

Action 2B: Email the Dept. of Justice to report an antitrust crime antitrust.complaints@usdoj.gov

Script:
Copy and paste or write your own.

The Dept. of Justice should investigate Louis DeJoy, Postmaster General for rigging the bid in granting XPO Logistics a $120 million contract while he and his family have ties to the company and will personally profit from this contract. As a taxpayer, I fear my money is being wasted on a specious contract that will actually increase postal costs unnecessarily, while enriching the PMG and his family. At the very least, this obvious conflict of interest warrants an investigation.

Action 2C: Call USPS and report misconduct by a Postal Service Employee: Call 1-888-877-7644

Joel Hansen Steaming Ahead in the Race for Port Commissioner!

Picture

Joel Hansen, one of our
endorsed candidates for Port Commissioner, successfully made it through the primary and needs your support to win the general election this November. Unlike the primary, if you are a registered voter in Thurston County, you can vote for both Joel and Bob Iyall, our second endorsed Port Commissioner candidate in November.

Your financial and volunteer support for these candidates from now until the election is critical for them to win. Joel and Bob are running against real estate broker Amy Evans, who has the financial backing of developers, and Jessie Simmons, a professional campaign manager who has lived in the Olympia area for only a few years. Did you know that the Port is the largest property owner in Thurston County? Might Amy Evans have a serious conflict of interest?

Volunteer opportunities for Joel Hansen and Bob Iyall include phone banking, mailing, post card writing and distributing flyers door to door (lit drop). Sign waving will take place closer to the election. Let’s actively help them win. Port Commissioners have a huge influence on our environment and on our economy.

Action: Donate to their campaigns and find out about volunteer opportunities on their websites Joel Hansen and Bob Iyall.
