Our Members of Congress Team Will Be Visiting Rep. Heck’s Office This Week and Needs Your Support – Turn Up The Heat!
ACTION: Call Representative Denny Heck (360) 459-8514
Our MoC team will be visiting Rep Heck’s office this week – let’s light up the phones and bring the message home.
Tell Rep. Heck and the rest of the House to turn up the heat on the trump administration. Congress need to hold public hearings with all officials involved in any Mueller investigation. And if officials defy subpoenas and refuse to testify, Congress absolutely must defend the balance of power instilled in our Constitution and hold them in contempt. If trump officials defy Congress and the Democrats do nothing, we no longer have a country of laws and our Constitution is rendered useless.

Real Consequences for AG Barr’s lies and evasions
Attorney General William Barr has acted as if his job is to protect the President, and not to administer justice. He has misled the American public and Congress about the findings of Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, making claims that are false.
Cabinet members can be impeached and can be prosecuted for crimes. Congress should be considering both; OI members should demand that our MOCs pursue impeachment, as well as contempt and perjury charges.
When Barr appeared in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last Wednesday, he made at least 6 misleading statements, which could qualify as perjury. He lied to Senators about whether Mueller ever requested to interview the President (he did) and whether Trump fired Comey as a result of a Rosenstein recommendation (Trump himself said that he had already decided to fire him). He misled the Senate about four other aspects of the Mueller report and how Barr chose to handle it. Congress must act so that there are consequences for perjury and misleading testimony, and to let those who work for Trump know that even though their boss can get away with lying to the American public, they should not expect similar treatment.
AG Barr is refusing to comply with House Committee requests that he appear in front of them to answer questions about his handling of the Mueller report. He was scheduled to testify to the House Judiciary Committee last week and also faced a deadline to provide subpoenaed materials to them. He did not appear, and the Committee did not receive the materials. His reason for not appearing in front of the Committee? He objected to having to answer questions posed by attorneys representing the Committee, as well as members of the Committee.
ACTION: Call or email our MOCs:
Representative Denny Heck 202-225-9740 dennyheck.house.gov/contact/email-me
Senator Patty Murray (202) 224-2621 www.murray.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contactme
Senator Maria Cantwell (202) 224-3441 www.cantwell.senate.gov/contact/email/form
Rep. Heck version: My name is _______________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. Attorney General Barr should not be allowed to simply refuse to comply with subpoenas and with his obligations to testify at Congressional hearings. His lies and misstatements should not go unchallenged. Please tell me what Representative Heck is doing to ensure that William Barr will be held accountable for his refusal to cooperate with lawful House inquiries and for providing false testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. I believe it is time for Congress to consider impeaching William Barr for dereliction of duty, protecting the President rather than citizens, and the House should press contempt charges.
Senator Cantwell/Murray version: My name is _______________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. Attorney General William Barr lied to Congress, and the American people, when he testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. Please tell me what Senator (Murray/Cantwell) is doing to ensure that he will be held accountable for providing false testimony. I believe it is time for Congress to consider impeaching William Barr for dereliction of duty, protecting the President rather than citizens, and the Senate should press charges of perjury.

Now Is The Time To Stop Military Intervention In Venezuela
President Trump’s National Security Advisor John Bolton is pushing hard for a military intervention in the leadership crisis in Venezuela. Let’s not let this disaster happen. Tell our MOCs that we absolutely oppose this idea. Even some Republicans are alarmed by the President’s interest in using our military in this way.
Make no mistake: the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela is alarming and we have a responsibility to help the people of Venezuela as they fight for a freer future. Images of Venezuelan government tanks steamrolling protesters have invoked gruesome memories of Tiananmen Square. But the lesson of the last two decades has certainly not been that sending our military in to enact regime change should be our tool of choice in these sorts of situations.
There are other approaches our government can take to alleviate the humanitarian concerns of Venezuelans. HR 549 would grant Temporary Protective Status (TPS) to Venezuelan nationals seeking to enter the United States. This would ensure protection and aid for any Venezuelans fleeing oppression under Maduro and his military allies. Tell our MOCs that we want this bill to receive more attention as a rebuttal to the Trump administration’s jingoist march towards military involvement.
ACTION: Call and ask Senators Murray and Cantwell to demand that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee promptly hold hearings with key members of the administration to explain any plans they have for military involvement.
ACTION:: Call and ask Representative Pramila Jayapal (206-674-0040) to advance HR 549 through the process in the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship. Call Denny Heck (360) 459-8514 or (202) 225-9740 as well and ask him to highlight this issue.
Script for our Senators: “Hi, I’m a concerned citizen calling to talk about the Trump Administration’s slow march towards military action in Venezuela. Military intervention in this crisis would be a disastrous idea and I haven’t heard my senator make enough noise about it. Concretely, I’d like to see my senator call for the Foreign Relations Committee to hold hearings with key administration figures. We need to figure out any plans they’ve been developing for military involvement.”
Script for Rep Jayapal: “Hi, I’m __________ with Indivisible. I’m calling Representative Jayapal in her capacity as Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship. I’m concerned by the Trump Administration’s increasingly militaristic rhetoric on the crisis in Venezuela, and I’d like to see Representative Jayapal advance HR 549 as a non-interventionist response to that rhetoric.”
Script for Rep Heck: “Hi, this is _______ with Olympia Indivisible. We want to know where Denny stands on the Venezuela Temporary Protective Status Act of 2019, and what he plans to do to emphasize this bill and make sure it gets passed. Trump’s administration is creeping ever closer to military action in Venezuela and we need to be highlighting non-military alternatives right now.”
Support County Emergency Housing Interim Regulations
We need your help in sending public comments to support an emergency waiver of code requirements allowing the County to develop several mitigation sites. Mitigation sites are temporary, legal camping sites that provide a level of order, safety, dignity and hygiene to reduce human suffering and the impacts of unmanaged camping on the community. The County plans to develop mitigation sites in partnership with cities in a regional approach to our homeless crisis.
The Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) is holding a PUBLIC HEARING on “Community Planning Titles 20, 21, 22 and 23 amendments - Emergency Housing Ordinance Interim Regulations”.
Information on the meeting and proposed ordinance may be found here:
Commissioner Edwards has spoken against this mitigation site even though he voted for it a couple months ago. Commissioners Hutchings & Menser are for it.
