PROTECT OUR QUALITY OF LIFE
THE SOLUTION TO DONALD TRUMP – SAFE VOTING FOR ALL AMERICANS
To win in November, we need millions of Americans to vote. However, 24 strategic states key to the 2020 elections do not yet have safe voting systems. Potential voters, many from disenfranchised communities, may be unwilling to risk their health at the polls. Olympia Indivisible has adopted a strategy to help others to vote safely. The strategy is to PUSH elected officials in those 24 states to enact safe voting systems and push US Senators from those states to pass legislation through Congress.
There’s no time to lose. The work is easy, can be done safely from your home, but must be completed before July 4. If we help others to vote, they’ll help us to win. A handbook was created to assist members with this important project.

WE NEED A NATIONAL PLAN FOR MASSIVE TESTING
CALL AND TELL CONGRESS TO ACT NOW!
This week Nobel economist Paul Romer stated that unless our country puts in place massive testing, the economy will not recover. The President’s approach of denying reality and downplaying testing so that “the numbers don’t make us look bad” is having a devastating impact primarily on the vulnerable, poor, and elderly.
Currently, states are only testing for those seriously ill, while the virus is also being spread by people with no symptoms. It is this uncertainty that has kept us locked down. What is needed is massive and frequent testing so that people can be confident they are not spreading or coming into contact with the virus.
Massive testing will be expensive. But the cost (estimated to be $74 billion) is THE MOST EFFECTIVE USE OF OUR TAX DOLLARS. According to Paul Romer, every dollar spent on testing would allow a worker to safely and confidently create $100 for the economy. This is how we can realistically save lives and rebuild our economy and we need to do it NOW.
ANY PLAN would be better than the current chaos, but the just released Harvard “Pandemic Resilience Plan” for national testing and tracing shows that we could stop COVID in its tracks by July 4th if we would act now. You can read about it here:
or here: https://ethics.harvard.edu/files/center-for-ethics/files/roadmapsupplement_final_1.pdf
ACTION: Call our Members of Congress and ask why they haven’t created a national plan for massive testing and tracing.
Script: My name is _______________ and I am calling as a member of Olympia Indivisible. I want to know why Congress is not using its power to create a national plan for the massive testing and tracing our country needs to safely reopen and stop the spread of the COVID virus.
Clearly, states cannot do this on their own and the White House won’t take responsibility.
Is the Senator willing to co-sponsor Senator Coon’s National Service Act that would make massive tracing a reality? Is the Senator/Congressman aware that according to Nobel economist Paul Romer, every dollar spent on testing would allow a worker to safely generate $100 for the economy? Where does the Senator stand on the “Pandemic Resilience” bipartisan plan just released from Harvard that could stop COVID in its tracks by July 4th?
We need a national plan for massive testing and tracing and we need it now. Will the Senator/Congressman make this a priority?

STRENGTHEN AMERICA’S HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE
We have a serious shortage of medical practitioners in the United States during this global pandemic. The Healthcare Workforce Resilience Act would allow qualified international physicians and nurses to fill staffing shortages by giving them access to unused immigrant visas. One sixth of our healthcare workforce is foreign-born. These immigrant doctors and nurses play a vital role in our healthcare system. This legislation would recapture and use up to 25,000 immigrant visas for nurses and 15,000 immigrant visas for physicians. The visas would help thousands of nurses who are stuck overseas due to green card backlogs. In addition, there are thousands of doctors who are working in our country on temporary visas, and they face many limitations due to their temporary status. This legislation would give the doctors durable immigration status so they can help our nation fight the coronavirus.
ACTION: Call our Members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor and vote yes on the Healthcare Workforce Resilience Act (S. 3599/H.R.6788).
Senator Patty Murray (253) 572-3636
Senator Maria Cantwell (253) 572-2281

SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY
CALL OUR SENATORS TO INVESTIGATE TRUMP’S FIRING OF THE FOURTH INSPECTOR GENERAL IN 5 WEEKS
On Friday, May 15th Trump fired State Dept. Inspector General Steve Linick, though no cause was given for the firing. It is known that IG Linick had opened an investigation of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and reports indicate that Pompeo personally made the recommendation to fire Mr. Linick. This is the fourth I.G. fired by Trump in the past five weeks: May 15, 2020 Steve Linick, State Dep’t Inspector General; May 1, 2020 Christi Grimm, HHS Inspector General; April 7, 2020 Glenn Fine, Defense Dep’t Inspector General; April 3, 2020 Michael Atkinson, Intelligence Community Inspector General.
Under law, the administration must notify Congress 30 days before formally terminating an inspector general so Mr. Linick is expected to leave his post then. Democrats have launched a probe, but they must do more than that, they must prevent this from happening.
ACTION: Call Senator Maria Cantwell (253)572-2281 Senator Patty Murray (253)572-3636
Representative Denny Heck (360) 459-8514
Ask our Senators and representative to do more than to probe Trump’s firing of all the Inspectors General; now is the time to write legislation that will protect them in performing their duties. As the responsibility of Inspectors General is to provide oversight for their particular agency they must have a Congressional shield from retaliation or subversion. Mitch McConnell is advocating cover for employers from the responsibility of protecting workers from COVID-19, it is more incumbent on Congress to assure the protection to Inspectors General.

Thurston County Food Bank Needs Community Support
In March and April, members of Olympia Indivisible generously donated funds to the Thurston County Food Bank. However,
the number of people they serve is on the rise. Of the nearly 9,000 people served county-wide each week, 25% are new -- folks who surprisingly find themselves relying on the Food Bank for the first time. About 4,000 served are elementary school children and younger kids in the Head Start program.
If you have not yet donated and can help with a contribution, it's easy via the OI website DONATE. Please note with your donation that it's for the Food Bank.
Thanks Olympia Indivisible members!
