Help Move Public Opinion!
Passing Biden’s American Rescue Plan was an incredible achievement, but day by day it is becoming clearer that reforming the filibuster is key to moving forward. We are in this campaign for the long haul because the country does not yet understand why filibuster reform is so important. This is not just about changing the rules to accomplish a Biden agenda. It is crucial for a functioning democracy. Our senators must hear us.
The national Indivisible leadership is asking all Indivisible chapters to help move the needle on public opinion by writing letters to the editor. You can do that easily with this one click tool provided by Indivisible. Be sure to reword and individualize your letter so that it is not rejected as a form letter.
Demand the Senate Eliminate the Filibuster to Save Our Democracy
Action: This week our action is simple. We want our senators to hear this message from as many members as possible.

Ask Our MoCs to Insist President Biden Ensure Global Health by Supporting the WTO Waiver
The world’s wealthiest countries, including the US, are currently blocking a South African and Indian proposal that the World Trade Organization waive intellectual property protections for COVID-19 vaccines and other technologies.
While the US is averaging two million doses of COVID 19 vaccine a day, people in 130 countries have not received a single dose. That’s about 2.5 billion people and current estimates are that it will be 2023 or 2024 before people in those countries get vaccinated. The proposed waiver would suspend global intellectual property protections around products that protect, contain, and treat COVID-19 until the pandemic is under control and it is supported by over 100 countries, but opposed by those nations in which corporations stand to make billions in profits.
This past Wednesday President Biden said, “We’re going to start off and ensure Americans are taken care of first, but we’re then going to try to help the rest of the world. If we have a surplus, we’re going to share it with the rest of the world,” He acknowledged the need for everyone to get vaccinated saying, “We’re not going to be ultimately safe, until the world is safe.”
In the US over 400 organizations are calling on President Biden to endorse the waiver and 115 members of the European Commission are urging the European Union to drop its opposition to the temporary suspension. Back home, Republican Senators Mike Lee, Tom Cotton, Joni Ernst and Todd Young sent a letter to Biden urging him to reject the upcoming proposal at the WTO arguing that waiving rights would halt America's progress as the fastest developer of a vaccine, started under Operation Warp Speed.
Action: Contact our Senators to support the WTO proposal to waive intellectual property protection for COVID-19 Vaccines.
Script: My name is _______ and I’m a member of Olympia Indivisible and I’m calling to ask Senator _____ to demand that President Biden be true to his word in making the world safe by supporting South Africa and India’s proposal that the World Trade Organization waive intellectual property protections for COVID-19 vaccines. He campaigned on being a man of compassion and this is not a difficult choice. Is he going to do what Senate Republicans want him to do or what is morally right? As a taxpayer who paid for Project Warp Speed, I want a world that’s safe for all of us, not one where people are allowed to die so that pharmaceutical companies can make billions in profits.

Take Action to End Washington State’s Regressive Tax Structure
Washington has one of the most regressive structures in the nation. Past attempts to rectify that have focused on an income tax, without any success. This year, the legislature is considering a capital gains tax, and there is a must read Seattle Times OpEd on the benefits of the capital gains tax under consideration. SB 5096 narrowly passed out of the Senate (25/24) and is now under consideration in the House Finance Committee. The committee has scheduled a public hearing on the bill for Monday, March 15 at 10:00am.
Action: Before 9am on Monday, March 15, sign in “Pro” or submit testimony to the House Finance Committee. The Take Action Network website makes this very simple to sign in ‘Pro’, or you can use Washington Legislature to sign in ‘Pro’ and leave comments as provided in the script
Script: A 2018 survey of all 50 states found that Washington has the most unfair state and local tax structure in the country, placing the burden of paying for state and local government on the backs of those who can least afford it and letting the wealthy off. It is time for the legislature to rectify this situation so that Washington can join the 41 other states with a capital gains tax and move out of our last place standing. People who can barely get by should not be the people most responsible for funding our state government. It is morally wrong and fiscally dumb. Please pass SB 5096 out of committee, and thank you for this opportunity to comment.
It’s Time to Fully Fund the IRS and Collect Needed Dollars for the Next Big Infrastructure Bill
Since the era of Newt Gingrich, the GOP has been cutting operating funds for the IRS, preventing them from auditing tax cheaters, particularly the wealthy. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has faced harsh budget cuts over the last decade, hindering its ability to serve the American People.
According to a recent report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), due to a lack of resources, the IRS failed to audit more than 897,000 wealthy individuals who skipped out on filing tax returns over a three‑year period – and these individuals owed nearly $46 billion in taxes. “

Action: Tell our Senators to fully fund the IRS and strengthen our tax laws.
Script: My name is _______ and I’m a member of Olympia Indivisible and I’m calling to ask Senator ______ to fully fund the IRS and strengthen our tax laws. Billions of dollars are not being collected from wealthy tax evaders. We need those dollars to fund our country’s infrastructure.
