Summer Time Self-Care
It’s been an intense year watching the political drama in Washington unfold. There is no shortage of national issues to react to this week.
Yet, if we are going to be in this for the long haul, we also need to renew ourselves and our ability to commit time and energy to our work. To renew means “to bring back to an original state of freshness and vigor”. One powerful way to energize ourselves is to invest in our own community and visibly see the results of our actions.
This week’s Call to Action reflects this goal. Act locally and in person:
Renew, refresh, recommit.

OI Endorses Helen Wheatley for Port of Olympia Commissioner
Last week Olympia Indivisible’s members voted overwhelmingly to endorse Helen Wheatley, who is running for Port of Olympia Commissioner, District 1. https://helenforport.com/
The election is this November and she is running against an incumbent, so there is plenty of work to do to help her win. The bottom line, voting to endorse Helen was just the beginning – we need to role up our sleeves and get to work supporting her campaign. OI is putting a plan together to work with Dr. Wheatley’s campaign and will be in touch with you shortly regarding ways you can get involved.
For starters, campaigns need money. One of the simplest things you can do is simply go to her campaign site and donate, whatever you are comfortable with. You can do that right here: https://secure.anedot.com/helenforport/donate
Just Say No – Decline To Sign – Ask Your Friends To Do The Same
If you encounter petitioners asking you to sign R-88, the anti-affirmative action resolution, decline to sign.
Decline to Sign R-88
This year, the Washington state Legislature approved I-1000, which overturned Washington’s multi-decade ban on affirmative action. I-1000 allows race, sex, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status to be factors when considering education or employment – but bans using any of those characteristics as the sole or deciding factor. I-1000 will prevent discrimination in public hiring and wage practices, prevent discrimination in public education, and ensure government contracts are awarded fairly. R-88 seeks to ban affirmative action by overturning I-1000. This referendum would put I-1000, which the Legislature already passed, on the fall ballot for approval or rejection by the voters. Conservative signature gatherers for R-88 are using deceptive and misleading messages that falsely claim they support equality.
Don’t be fooled! Decline to sign R-88.
We can celebrate that Tim Eyman’s latest bad idea, I-1648, failed to qualify for the November ballot because of a lack of signatures. Let’s help to do the same with R-88. Signature gathering goes on through July 27.
Another Tim Eyman scam bites the dust: I-1648 fails to qualify for the November ballot
I 1648 will not on the ballot
ACTION: Forward this action to your friends across the state – this initiative is statewide. Call some friends and neighbors and let them know about this. Friends don’t let friends be tricked into signing bad initiatives.
Invitation to Hear Announcement By Former Dem Candidate in CD3, Carolyn Long, This Monday, July 8 in Centralia
Carolyn Long will make “an announcement” on Monday, July 8 at 11 a.m. at the Centralia Library. No one knows exactly what Carolyn will announce, but most have a pretty good idea that she will announce her candidacy to run again as a Representative in Congressional District 3. The event will last until 12:00.

Protect Our Quality of Life
Trump hasn’t invaded anywhere yet and we don’t want him to start. We must continue to make it clear to our senators that they must prevent this from happening.
Tom Udall introduced Senate Bill: S.1039 - Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act of 2019 on April 4, 2019.
“This bill prohibits funds from being used for kinetic military operations against Iran unless Congress authorizes such an action, with various exceptions such as in response to an imminent threat. ("Kinetic military operations" typically refers to active military actions, in contrast to latent operations or cyberwarfare.)”
Currently this bill has 25 cosponsors, but neither of our senators are among them. We need to encourage them to cosponsor this bill and oppose any military action in Iran.
S.1039 - Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act of 2019
Tell all of them to make it clear to Trump that Congress will not authorize, support or fund any war.
