Denny Heck Says Impeach – We Say Pedal Down!
Breaking: Denny Heck declares support for impeachment inquiry! Tell him you appreciate that he has taken a stand, but also ask why haven’t House Democrats made more progress in exposing Trump’s corruption? Time is running out!
The Mueller testimony was more important than the media reported. More members of the House began to declare their support for impeachment proceedings following his testimony.
Contrary to what some pundits noted, here is what Robert Mueller told the House Intelligence Committee meeting last week, in the words of Jennifer Rubin, Washington Post columnist: “he confirmed that President Trump accepted help from a hostile foreign power and lied about it, that he lied when he claimed exoneration, that he was not completely truthful in written answers, that he could be prosecuted after leaving office and that he misled Americans by calling the investigation a hoax”.
That public testimony was described by Rep. Heck in his statement today (July 28), which can be read here: STATEMENT: REP. DENNY HECK SUPPORTS AN IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY
Senator Patty Murray has also called for “proceedings to determine whether the president's action necessitate impeachment," today.
Still, this isn’t enough at this point. An impeachment inquiry will not cover the full range of wrong-doing the Trump administration has committed. While thanking Rep. Heck for his support of impeachment, we should also be asking him to be accountable for his commitment to OI and his constituents to investigate the full range of the Trump administration corruption, lies, and authoritarian moves. While we read daily in the media about Trump administration scandals, House investigations have produced no visible results. The behavior of the Trump administration shows they are no longer afraid of the House.
OI members should express our frustration to Rep. Heck that the House is not making any progress on exposing the crimes and misdeeds, since he told OI members in Olympia just last year that the Trump administration’s misdeeds would be coming out soon. It is time to increase the heat on our Democratic MOCs to produce results.
As the November 2020 elections loom closer, it is imperative that Democrats not waste any more time; they must begin revealing the corruption at all levels in this administration and hold those responsible accountable.
ACTION: Call or email Representative Heck: Phone: 202-225-9740
My name is _______________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. Please let Rep. Heck know that I strongly endorse his decision to support an impeachment inquiry. Robert Mueller’s testimony to Congress, which mirrored his report, left no doubt that this President has committed impeachable crimes. While I appreciate this decision, please also let the Representative know that I remain frustrated and highly concerned that House Democrats are not succeeding at the single most important thing they were elected to do, which is to provide oversight of the Trump administration and to prosecute their crimes.
When Rep. Heck spoke to OI members in Olympia last year, he promised that the new Democratic majority would begin to reveal the misdeeds of Trump and his cronies. It’s been a year, and House Democrats have not accomplished anything, even though the media continues to uncover new examples of their corruption. I demand that Rep. Heck make it a priority to meet, in-person, with OI during the Congressional break and explain why nothing has been accomplished to date, and what his plans are to begin delivering on his promise.
Rep. Heck must put more effort into all aspects of investigating the Trump administration and holding them accountable. Unless the American people are made aware of the full extent of the Trump administration’s perfidy, as a Nation we are in danger of losing the next election. Supporting an impeachment inquiry is an excellent first step, I believe that Rep. Heck must provide more of an accounting to his constituents of his efforts to protect democracy.
Denounce “Moscow Mitch”
Mitch McConnell recently blocked two pieces of House legislation to secure next years 2020 election from coming to the Senate floor. Commenting on McConnell, Paul Waldmanh in the Washington Post wrote: "so here are some things that in our system today, are 'partisan'... Securing our voting systems from foreign hacking, allowing every American to vote, making it easy as possible for Americans to vote, and ensuring every vote count equally." Mitch is against those basic American rights and will do whatever he can to subvert democracy and retain power. He is working to meet Moscow’s ends, whether he is on their payroll or not.
This week McConnell received the moniker of Moscow Mitch from Joe Scarborough. "How can Moscow Mitch so willingly turn a blind eye not only this year to what his Republican chairman of the Intel Committee is saying, to what Robert Mueller is saying, to what the FBI director is saying, to what the DNI [director of national intelligence] is saying, to what the CIA is saying, to what the United States military intel community is saying,” Scarborough asked.
“How can Moscow Mitch keep denying that [Russian President] Vladimir Putin continues to try to subvert American democracy?”
ACTION: Call your senator and ask them to publicly denounce the not so honorable senator from Kentucky, to stand up for the vote of people and for safe, secure elections.
Get Big Money Out Of Our Elections
New York state has mandated public financing of elections by the end of 2019. We can do it too. New York State Budget Mandates Public Financing of Elections"
A recent Pew Research Center report finds several indications of public concern over campaign spending. There is widespread – and bipartisan – agreement that people who make large political donations should not have more political influence than others, but Americans largely don’t see that as a description of the country today.
And there is extensive support for reining in campaign spending: 77% of the public says “there should be limits on the amount of money individuals and organizations” can spend on political campaigns; just 20% say they should be able to spend as much as they want.
ACTION: Advocate for public, transparent election funding.
Call: Your state legislators.
Script: Hi. I’m from [ZIP] and I’m part of a bipartisan majority that wants big money out of politics. I would like Washington to follow New York’s lead in requiring publicly financed elections. Can I count on [NAME] to advocate for a transparent independent commission to explore the public financing of elections and put together legislations like New York’s for next year’s legislative session?

Demand that Thurston County Sheriff Comply with Immigrant Rights Law
Effective May 21, 2019 our state passed new legislation protecting the rights of immigrants. The new legislation, SB 5497, specifically states that local law enforcement agencies may not give federal immigration authorities access to interview individuals while they are in custody unless the person consents in writing to be interviewed. The person must be informed of their right to refuse an interview with federal immigration enforcement authorities.
The Thurston County Sheriff’s office is not in compliance with the new state law. Members of our community have met with the Sheriff’s Department, and the Sheriff’s office understands that they are not in compliance with the law. The State Attorney General Bob Ferguson can require full compliance with the new law.
ACTION: Write to Attorney General Bob Ferguson and ask him to require the Thurston County Sheriff’s Department to uphold their responsibilities and fully comply with SB 5497.

Topic: Exploring questions provoked by reading "The Plot to Destroy Democracy" by Malcolm Nance.
Do you find yourself asking everyday “How could this have happened?” Analyst Malcolm Nance has some fascinating ideas about who got us here and where this all could be leading. Check out his talk: https://youtu.be/paYbAyTtQto, read his book “The Plot to Destroy Democracy” or just come to share ideas as we explore questions he raises.
Our country currently has an administration that does not have democratic values and it is clear that the Trump administration is diminishing our democratic institutions.
Malcolm Vance is painting a picture that this is a global phenomenon. Many questions arise such as:
We will have an initial get together on August 7 at 7PM, since the book has 3 sections, perhaps 3 meetings will be needed to digest the content and discuss questions.
