Demand immigrants and refugees be treated humanely at the border
Ask Congressman Heck to support H.R.5383 - New Way Forward Act. This bill introduced 12/10/2019 by Jesus Garcia D-IL would among other things, end mandatory detention and require probable cause for arrest, phase out private-for-profit detention facilities and use of jails, impose a statute of limitations for commencing removal proceedings, restore judicial discretion and end removal without due process, and decriminalize migration. There are currently 39 cosponsors including Pramila Jayapal D-WA.
ACTION: Call Congressman Heck and ask him to become a cosponsor of H.R 5383
Script: Hi. I’m ______ and a member of OI. I’m calling to express the American value toward people seeking refuge or to become citizens of this country. This bill would stop ICE and border patrol from treating people like criminals by restoring due process, giving judges discretion to consider individual situations, and end automatic deportation for people convicted of minor crimes. Can I count on Congressman Heck to co-sponsor H.R. 5383?
On a related note: Support due process and language access for indigenous people in ICE custody.
Due to imminent dangers, more people from remote areas of Central America are seeking to enter the US, creating an urgent need for interpreters to translate for them in their indigenous language so that they may advocate for themselves in legal proceedings.
Donate: To PLM (Promotores de la Liberación Migrante), a group of language justice and community organizing volunteers, to fund expansion of their interpreting services.

Volunteer for the Thurston County Homeless Census
The Thurston County homeless census will be on January 23rd. The census is used to help determine government funding for shelters and other support services. This year, Thurston County has the responsibility for the count, and they need up to 140 volunteers. Please help if you can.
ACTION: Contact the Census Team by email: firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer.
Make Sure that Olympia has a Full and Accurate Count in the 2020 Census
The National League of Cities has published guidelines to help cities ensure an accurate count in the 2020 census. Following these guidelines, Thurston County established the Thurston Region Complete Count Committee to develop plans for the cities in our county. Members of the committee want to encourage more people to apply for jobs with the US Census Bureau. An inclusive and accurate 2020 census will help to ensure the representation we deserve at the national level.
ACTION: To apply for a census job, contact the US Census Bureau at: 2020census.gov/en/jobs.html
