Dear Oly Indivisiblers,
In anticipation that GOP Senators will vote to acquit Trump next week. the Steering Committee of Olympia Indivisible sends all of you a big hug filled with solidarity and resilience. If you are feeling angry or heartsick, you're entitled! It hurts like hell to see such callous, calculated disregard for democracy. So, big hug. And deep breath, But then, let's get back to work.
What does that mean? It means we harness our volunteerism and channel it into electoral activism. We volunteer, together, indivisible, in organized work which focuses on making a big blue wave in 2020. Over 195 (!!!!!) OI members are now signed on one of OI's teams, helping us to work on our 2020 goals to take back the presidency, flip the Senate, protect the House majority, and win key Washington state and county races. THANK YOU! This is how we are going to make a difference.
Not on a team yet? Sign up! And for all of us in Olympia Indivisible, here are some good concrete actions to take this week.
The Olympia Indivisible Steering Committee

Protect Our Elections from Foreign Interference
Free and fair elections require transparency so we can know the true source of funding for political ads. The Pew Research Center found that 65% of Americans identified an internet-based source as their leading source of information for the 2016 election. Russia interfered in the 2016 election by purchasing $100,000 in political ads and publishing roughly 3,000 ads linked to fake accounts. Current regulations do not provide enough transparency to let us know the source of funding for online political ads. We need the same disclosure requirements for online ads as we have for TV and radio ads.
ACTION: Call Representative Denny Heck to ask him to co-sponsor the Honest Ads Act.
Representative Denny Heck (360) 459-8514
Script: My name is _________________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am calling to ask Representative Heck to co-sponsor the Honest Ads Act, H.R. 2592. I believe that online political ads should be subject to the same disclosure requirements as TV and radio ads. The Honest Ads Act would mandate such disclosure and would ban foreign entities from secretly buying political ads to interfere in our elections. Can I count on Representative Heck to co-sponsor H.R. 2592? Thank you.
ACTION: Call our Senators to ask them to co-sponsor the Honest Ads Act.
Senator Maria Cantwell (253) 572-2281 Senator Patty Murray (253) 572-3636
Script: My name is _________________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am calling to ask Senator __________ to co-sponsor the Honest Ads Act, S. 1356. I believe that online political ads should be subject to the same disclosure requirements as TV and radio ads. The Honest Ads Act would mandate such disclosure and would ban foreign entities from secretly buying political ads to interfere in our elections. Can I count on Senator____________ to co-sponsor S. 1356? Thank you.
Stop Rollbacks on Violence to Women Protections
The Office on Violence against Women (OVW), part of Department of Justice has rolled back the clock 50 years on protection of women in cases of violence. OVW changed the definition of violence to be about physical harm only, discounting the psychological harm/abuse. This is the continued devaluation of women by thie Trump Regime. The Violence Against Women Act was put into law in 1994 and co-sponsored by Biden and Hatch. In 2000, and again in 2005 the Act was renewed by a bipartisan vote. Renewed again in 2013, but bitterly fought by Republicans. Since December 2018 only short term funding was voted on. November 2019 Senator Murray and Cantwell introduced the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act a companion version has been passed in the House (HR 1585). This is one of the 275 pieces of legislation sitting on Mitch's desk waiting to move forward.
ACTION: Call Senators Murray and Cantwell and ask how can we move this Act along and restore the protections women need?
Senator Murray (253) 572-3636 Senator Cantwell (253) 572-2281
Stop Feeding Corporate Profit by Criminalizing People Seeking Safety and a Better Life
This is regarding the impending legislation to renew private federal prison contracts in the state of Texas. Private prisons are used as the primary resource for detaining asylum seekers by ICE. The primary goal of the private prison system is obviously to make a profit, (in these cases, a large profit), at the expense of inmate and staff safety. Over crowding and untrained and inadequate staff are the norm. These are federal facilities, supported with our tax dollars, in our names.
ACTION: Write/or call Sen. Maria Cantwell, Sen. Patty Murray, and Rep. Denny Heck and express your opposition to this extended (ten years) contract. (look up).
Script: Hi. I’m from [ZIP] and I’m writing to express my frustration at extending federal private prison contracts in Texas for another 10 years with my tax dollars. If these contracts are approved, it will further link Texas to an already bloated and deadly detention system. Detention of immigrants strips people of their dignity, is expensive, and unnecessary to ensure court appearances. I demand [NAME] votes no on extending contracts for both the South Texas Detention Complex, the T. Don Hutto Detention Center, and the Houston Processing Center. Thank you.
