Let’s Call It What It Is: Domestic Terrorism
Washington State made national news this last week with three acts of domestic terrorism; a bomb threat/hostage situation at Democratic Headquarters in Spokane, and two shootings in Olympia at pro-Trump rallies. Man arrested in Olympia, Wash., after pro-Trump demonstrations turn violent
Today we are seeing political violence encouraged by our own President as a show of loyalty to him. We see intimidation with the open carrying of weapons. We see unprecedented recruitment by right-wing militias that are sending members to the homes of election officials to threaten their families. You can read more about it here: The risk of right-wing terrorism is rising dramatically
Understanding and defining acts of domestic terrorism while still protecting free speech is complicated. Unfortunately, little has been done over the past four years to respond to this growing threat. Laws defining domestic terrorism at both the state and federal level are vague and hard to enforce. This confusion is being exploited by right-wing terrorist groups. Ammon Bundy and allies build dangerous network of militia members, report says
As we approach the Inauguration and more COVID restrictions are put into place, the threat of political violence will only increase. We must act now to prevent needless tragedy.
Action: Ask Governor Inslee to immediately form a Domestic Terrorism Task Force to prepare for this unprecedented wave of political violence and intimidation.
Script: My name is ________and I am a resident of Washington State. I am contacting you because of the alarming acts of political violence that happened in our state just this week. Our current domestic terrorism laws are vague and inadequate to meet this growing threat. I ask that you immediately form a task force to help provide local law enforcement with realistic support, including the Washington State National Guard if needed. The task force should also make recommendations to improve our current state and federal laws concerning acts of political violence and intimidation. This vagueness and confusion is causing needless harm to our country.
Governor Jay Inslee

Still Time to Write Postcards
It is still time to write postcards for the Georgia run-off race, one of the most important elections of a year filled with significant moments.
Olympia area volunteers have already written more than 6,000 postcards for the Georgia election. Writers are needed for another 2,000 cards that have just arrived.
Action: Please contact email@example.com to request cards in multiples of 25. Postcards, addresses, instructions, and a short script will be provided for you to pick up at one of three locations. You'll need to buy your own 35-cent stamps.
Since this campaign is targeting likely Democratic voters who don't vote in every election, the sponsoring organization is working to get them to vote in person on Election Day.
The mail date isn't until December 26, so there's still plenty of time to write!
Stop the Disrespect for Dr. Jill Biden Right Now!
Demand an apology from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Opinion!
A man who does not have a PhD says Dr. Jill Biden is “fraudulent” and “comic” to use her title because her doctorate isn’t in medicine.
The Wall Street Journal Opinion published “Is There a Doctor in the White House?” on 12/11/2020 by Joseph Epstein.
Read Chelsea Steiner’s 12/12/2020 rebuttal “Joseph Epstein’s Misogynistic Op-Ed on Dr. Jill Biden Is as Out of Touch and Irrelevant as He Is” published in The Mary Sue.
“Epstein’s work drips with the kind of contempt and insecurity that can only be possessed by the most ineffectual and useless white men, threatened by a world that is leaving him in the dust. It’s no surprise then that the Wall Street Journal, a conservative bastion of old white men with sexist irrelevant opinions, would publish his work.”
Action: Send an email to Paul Gigot, editor for The Wall Street Journal

Call Out Representatives McMorris Rogers and Newhouse in Their District Newspapers for Their Lack Of Courage and Principles
Over 100 Republicans in the House of Representatives chose to actively support the litigation brought by Texas Attorney General Paxton requesting the Supreme Court invalidate the election results in four states, none of them Texas. Fortunately, the Supreme Court turned aside this particular piece of legal nonsense, but not before the 100+ representatives signed on in support of the lawsuit, as amicus curae, indicating their active support of the lawsuit.
Among other outrages, the lawsuit attempts to involve a Federal Court in invalidating state election results, a form of federal intervention in state affairs that Republicans of former years used to protest loudly. It would have also allowed one state to tell others how they must conduct their business, in this case elections, but just as easily it could have been many other matters that are properly the business of states under our constitution. A few courageous Republicans stood against this corruption of what were Republican party ideals not that long ago, but only a few.
In Washington, both Reps. McMorris Rogers and Newhouse signed on as amicus. Representative Herrera Beutler did not, and at least deserves some credit for not being one of Trump’s sheep this time. But, the two who did should be called out for their cowardice and lack of principles. Rather than contacting them directly, where our messages will probably be ignored, we suggest letters to the editor in the main newspapers in their districts that describe their lack of principles and betrayal of states rights.
Action: Send letters to the editor to the following newspapers
The Spokesman-Review (Spokane)
Union-Bulletin (Walla Walla)
Tri-City Herald (Tri-Cities)
Script: Dear Editor, What has happened to Republican party principles? The party that consistently supported the rights of states to determine their own destiny and develop their own solutions has lost its way.
Representative (Cathy McMorris Rogers/Dan Newhouse) actually joined a lawsuit brought by Texas Attorney General Paxton asking the U.S. Supreme Court to invalidate elections in four other states (not Texas) because Paxton thought their election laws were erroneous. This is an unconstitutional invitation for federal overreach, the conduct of elections is clearly within state jurisdictions as long as the state does not actively discriminate against some of its citizens. This is also an invitation for chaos in the courts: to have states suing other states because they don’t like the laws the other state adopted.
What is to stop Florida from suing Washington because our speed limits are too high for their liking, or because some of our communities benefit from public utilities while they pay exorbitant power rates? Republicans used to call efforts like this nonsense. Now Representative (McMorris Rogers/Newhouse) supports them? Time to let her/him know that she/he is not upholding the US Constitution or protecting the citizens of her/his district. Fortunately, the US Supreme Court already told her/him the former.
