SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY

Election Results
The Primary was last Tuesday and our OI endorsed candidates did well. Thank you to all of you who stepped up to help make those wins happen!

There are still 20,000 votes to count in Thurston County, but as of Friday, August 7, here are the results:
TC Commissioner District 1: Carolina Mejia - Winner - Advances to General Election 35% of vote
TC Commissioner District 2: Michael Steadman - 2nd - Advances to General Election 43% of vote
Thurston Superior Court Judge Position 8: Sharonda D. Amamilo - Winner - Advances to General Election 45%
LD 22 State Senator: Sam Hunt - Winner - Advances to General Election 59%
LD 22 State Representative Pos. 1: Laurie Dolan - Winner - Advances to General Election 62%
LD 22 State Representative Pos. 2: Jessica Bateman - 2nd - Advances to General Election 34%
Thurston County Results: https://results.vote.wa.gov/results/20200804/thurston/

CD 10: US Representative: Beth Doglio - 2nd – Advances to General Election15%
https://results.vote.wa.gov/results/current/CongressionalDistrict10.html

What Does It Mean?
TC Commissioner District 1: Mejia had a great primary win and needs strong support for the general election. She will be running against either Republican C Davis or Bud Blake, who files as an "Independent", but is a favorite of Glen Morgan and other hard-right Republicans. It is critical that a progressive win this seat – that’s Carolina Mejia. She is in a strong position to win and we need to step up and help her get to the finish line.

TC Commissioner District 2: Steadman lost to Commissioner Gary Edwards by 13%. However, while in the primary, only voters in District 2 could vote, the whole County votes in the general election, including the more liberal 3rd District (Tye Menser’s district). Upshot? Steadman can definitely win, but his campaign will need a lot of help in order to beat the incumbent.

Thurston Superior Court Judge Position 8: Amamilo looks solid.

LD 22 State Senator: Hunt will win

LD 22 State Representative Pos. 1: Dolan will win

LD 22 State Representative Pos. 2: Bateman should win the general election, because she will likely pick up the votes which went to her three Democratic opponents in the primary. (Even though she is in second place to the Republican as of today, votes for this seat came in 65% Democrat, 35% Republican.)

CD 10: US Representative: Doglio has a tough fight on her hands. She is running against a fellow-Democrat, Marilyn Strickland, who won 6% more votes than Beth in the primary. Doglio won Thurston County, but Tacoma is a big part of District 10.

It’s Showtime! There are only 12 weeks left until the 2020 election.

Twelve weeks to meet our OI 2020 Electoral goals, Win the presidency, Flip the Senate, Hold the House, Win key elections and legislation at the County and State levels.

We currently have over 770 members. Of that number we have around 100 that are pretty active. We understand people are busy, people have lives, even in a pandemic. But if you want to make a change, if you want to meet our shared goals, it is time. We need you. If you can contribute a little, if you can contribute a lot, we need you. Now.

Let's Get Real, because we must. We currently have over 770 members. Of that number, at the moment, about one in seven are actively engaged. We understand people are busy, people have lives, even in a pandemic. But if you (yes! you!) really want to see victory in November,  IT. IS. TIME. TO ENGAGE.

To that end, Lisa Ornstein, Carla Wulfsberg, Tom Dyer and other  OI Movers and Shakers  will be in personally touch with you and every one of our 770 members over the next two weeks.  We want to know what races are most important to you and how many hours a week you are willing commit over the next 12 weeks to Make the Change We Need To See.

Whatever that looks like,  whether it's an hour a month or ten hours a week, we will help you be effective and be supported and be successful. So please, please, please, step up.

In these pandemic times, most work will be done remotely. Never done this work? No worries. We will train you, we'll support you, and we'll be there with you while you it.  We will  take the fear out of stepping up and help you Gain the Courage to Do the Work that Must Be Done. Together, we can do this!

So, think about your priorities and your time now. Raise your hand – step up! If you are ready to go and don’t want to wait for that call, just drop a line to indivisibletom@gmail.com and we will get you lined up – rise up!

SUPPORT OUR POSTAL WORKERS.  PROTECT YOUR BALLOT!

This week Postmaster General Louis Dejoy decimated USPS leadership, firing and replacing 25 seasoned administrators. This is a blatant attempt to interfere with the Postal Service in order to help the President win re-election by creating chaos with mail-in ballots during a pandemic.

Although members of Congress have called for an investigation by Inspector General Tammy Whitcomb and the House Oversight Committee will hold public hearings in September, the damage will be done unless we act now. President Trump has a 3-prong attack to try to invalidate ballots cast by mail.  First, he continues to promote disinformation, saying that mail-in ballots are not safe. Second, he is trying to interfere in public trust and the smooth running of the Post Office to delay ballots. Third, he will likely demand that mail-in votes not yet counted by election day be thrown out and then declare a failed election. You can read more here: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/trump-has-launched-three-pronged-attack-election/615034/

Actions:

1. Sign the petition to remove Postmaster General Dejoy for tampering with mail delivery.
https://sign.moveon.org/petitions/remove-the-postmaster

2. Call our Members of Congress and ask why they are not funding the Post Office during the pandemic and before a presidential election.

Script: My name is _______. I am calling as a member of Olympia Indivisible to urge (Senator/Congressman)___________ to pass funding for the Post Office to help them through the pandemic. Although the Postal Service for the last 30 years has been self-funded, they need our help now. Since Congress did not pass needed funding, President Trump is sabotaging the postal service to help him get re-elected. The Constitution guarantees our right to prompt, reliable postal service regardless of cost.

I also ask that Senator/Congressman _______ do everything in (his/her) power to investigate Trump’s Postmaster General and his attempts to slow down the mail.

Congressman Denny Heck 360-459-8514
Senator Maria Cantwell (253) 572-2281
Senator Patty Murray 202-224-2621

One Week Left to Help States Provide Safe Voting
As the pandemic escalates, 16 states still do not provide absentee mail-in ballots or expanded early in-person voting.
During these last four weeks the Advocacy Initiative project, we will continue to PUSH Governors and Election Officials in those targeted states. We also need to contact their US Senators to support safe voting legislation now in Congress.  The work is all done remotely from home, it’s easy, and it’s crucial. Contact lists and scripts are provided. The OI Advocacy Initiative Team will help you get started during personalized training sessions. If you’ve already been making contacts but have a few questions, join us at the beginning of a “Check-In and Get Started” session. These sessions are offered twice a week and will continue through mid-August.
