Another week, more mass killings, yet another week without action on sensible gun control.
Once again, we are shocked and saddened that at least 29 more people have been killed by young men with guns; young men that should never have had access to guns. As a nation, we continue to do nothing to solve this epidemic of violence. We should not simply accept it as something outside of our control.
Our neighbor to the north, Canada, has a rate of gun deaths that is six times lower the U.S.; we have a current rate of 12.2 gun related deaths per 100,000 people, and Canada has a rate of 2.05. Globally, the six countries that contribute the most to gun deaths are the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Columbia and Guatemala.
One simple tool, background checks, might have helped prevent at least some of these tragedies. National polls consistently find that a large majority of U.S. residents support universal background checks. And, yet, the Republican majorities in Congress have refused to consider legislation requiring universal background checks, much less any stronger steps to curb gun violence.
Now that the Democrats control the House, they were able to pass legislation this February (HR 8) requiring universal background checks. So far, the Senate, under “Moscow Mitch” has effectively refused to consider the House legislation, nor are they considering any of their own.
If we are ever going to end this epidemic of mass shootings, we must urge our Senators to press harder to enact gun control legislation such as universal background checks. Even if background checks are only a small piece of the solution, starting to turn the tide against the NRA and their cronies in the GOP like Moscow Mitch is a vital first step towards reducing gun violence.
ACTION: Call or email Senators Murray and Cantwell:
My name is _______________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am horrified and angered by the epidemic of gun violence in our country; we have had 252 mass shootings in the US this year, more than 1 a day. That is insane. We don’t have to tolerate this. Our level of gun violence is much higher than other First World countries, and is on par with failing countries such as Guatemala and Venezuela. Please tell me what Senator (Murray/Cantwell) is planning to do to begin to pass sensible gun control legislation, and put an end to this senseless string of tragedies.
This year, the House passed HR8 requiring universal background checks, and sent it to the Senate which has done nothing with it. Moscow Mitch’s donors do not want gun control, just like they don’t want to protect every citizen’s right to vote, and so he stops any and all attempts to curb gun violence. What is Senator (Murray/Cantwell) doing to expose Moscow Mitch for what he has shown himself to be: a tool for the gun lobby, for the rich and for Putin? Don’t let these latest tragedies fade from our memory; make Moscow Mitch and his cronies accountable for them, and remind the American people, who overwhelmingly support background checks, who their real enemy is.
Protect Food Assistance for 3 Million People
The Trump administration’s proposed rule would take away food assistance for 3 million people, including 500,000 children who would lose free school meals. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the first line of defense against hunger. The change in eligibility would take food off the tables of working families with children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
We need to tell the Food and Nutrition Service that we oppose the proposal to amend SNAP eligibility.

Ask Denny Heck for a Town Hall
It’s August recess and there is nothing on Congress-member Heck’s website about where and when he is publicly meeting with his constituents. This is the best opportunity for Denny to meet with us, as the August recess is an extended one. Call and ask Congressman Heck about holding a town hall in the South Sound area.
Last week Congressman Heck announced his support for the initiation of an impeachment inquiry by the House Judiciary Committee. This is an excellent example of our representative hearing the peoples’ concerns and acting on them.
In that light, it has been suggested by some constitutional scholars that Congress begin impeachment with some of Trump’s cabinet members, as they are clearly corrupt and it would give Congress an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the intricacies of the impeachment procedure before going after the biggest scoundrel. Let’s suggest to Denny that they begin with Wilbur Ross. Commerce Secretary Ross has defied Congressional subpoenas by refusing to turn over documents related to the citizen question on the census and he lied to Congress about the reasons for the inclusion of the citizen question. Furthermore, Ross has a tainted past, having invested heavily in and served as Vice Chair of the Bank of Cyprus; a bank known for its connections to Russian money laundering and oligarchs. There are indications that this has influenced some policies in the Commerce Department which do not serve the American people and are probably illegal.
ACTION: Call or email Representative Heck: Phone: 360-459-8514
Script: Congressman Heck, as a member of OI and I am looking forward to hearing about your plans for Congress and the pressing issues of the day: impeachment, climate change, immigration, etc. When and where can I expect the town hall to be so that we in the South Sound region can hear about your goals in Congress and plans to address these ongoing challenges in the future?

Topic: Exploring questions provoked by reading "The Plot to Destroy Democracy" by Malcolm Nance.
Do you find yourself asking everyday “How could this have happened?” Analyst Malcolm Nance has some fascinating ideas about who got us here and where this all could be leading. Check out his talk: https://youtu.be/paYbAyTtQto, read his book “The Plot to Destroy Democracy” or just come to share ideas as we explore questions he raises.
Our country currently has an administration that does not have democratic values and it is clear that the Trump administration is diminishing our democratic institutions.
Malcolm Vance is painting a picture that this is a global phenomenon. Many questions arise such as:
- Should we look for response to this in political party platforms?
- If not in platforms should we suggest/demand it be?
- What policies would be good to support such as working with allies?
- Is there a question or two here to be used by the Endorsement team?
We will have an initial get together on August 7 at 7PM, since the book has 3 sections, perhaps 3 meetings will be needed to digest the content and discuss questions.
