Gun control, keeping the pressure on our MOCs.
This last week, both Moscow Mitch and the Trump regime dropped hints that they may support some types of gun control legislation. Even though this is likely another Republican ruse, we need to take advantage of their public stance. Let’s remind our MOCs that we want strong public support for them for passing sensible gun control legislation.
In the Senate, the next step is to take up HR 8, as our Call to Action described last week. Senator Murray has responded to the killings with a pair of strong Tweets on Aug 4 and 5 calling for the Senate to take action on the universal background check legislation passed by the House earlier this year (HR 8). We have not found a record of a response yet from Senator Cantwell.
In the House, which has passed background check legislation, requesting them to reinstate the ban on assault rifles is a logical next step. A recent study found that the ban was effective at reducing mass shootings; unfortunately it was allowed to sunset in 2004 by the NRA and the Republicans they control. Let’s thank Representative Heck for passage of the universal background check legislation, and request that he support legislation to renew a ban on assault weapons.
ACTION: Call or email Senator Murray thanking her for her stance on universal background checks and urging her to keep working hard on it:
Senator Patty Murray Phone: (202) 224-2621
My name is _______________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am appalled and frightened by the endless list of mass killings in our country. Thank you for your Twitter comments following the recent tragedies in El Paso and Dayton, supporting the Senate taking up HR 8, the universal background check bill passed by the House earlier this year. Please tell me how you are going to force Moscow Mitch to agree to bring HR 8 to the Senate floor for consideration.
Call or email Senator Maria Cantwell asking her to speak out loudly against gun violence and asking her to push for Senate consideration of HR 8. Phone: (202) 224-3441
My name is _______________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am appalled and frightened by the endless list of mass killings in our country. I implore you to speak out against this senseless violence, and take a public stand supporting sensible gun control legislation. I asked last week that you support efforts to bring HR 8 to the Senate floor for consideration and ask now that you tell me how you are going to force Moscow Mitch to agree to considering this legislation.
Call or email Representative Denny Heck, thanking him for House passage of universal background checks and asking him to support reinstatement of the assault weapons ban. Phone: 202-225-9740
My name is _______________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am appalled and frightened by the endless list of mass killings in our country. I strongly support universal background checks and other sensible gun control legislation and appreciate House passage of HR 8 earlier this year. I believe the next step is to reinstate the ban on assault weapons that the Republicans let lapse in 2004 and urge you to introduce legislation to do that.
Keep Asking Denny Heck for a Town Hall
It’s August recess and there is still nothing on Congress-member Heck’s website about where and when he is publicly meeting with his constituents. This is the best opportunity for Denny to meet with us, as the August recess is an extended one. Call and ask Congressman Heck about holding a town hall in the South Sound area.
Last week Congressman Heck announced his support for the initiation of an impeachment inquiry by the House Judiciary Committee. This is an excellent example of our representative hearing the peoples’ concerns and acting on them.
In that light, it has been suggested by some constitutional scholars that Congress begin impeachment with some of Trump’s cabinet members, as they are clearly corrupt and it would give Congress an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the intricacies of the impeachment procedure before going after the biggest scoundrel. Let’s suggest to Denny that they begin with Wilbur Ross. Commerce Secretary Ross has defied Congressional subpoenas by refusing to turn over documents related to the citizen question on the census and he lied to Congress about the reasons for the inclusion of the citizen question. Furthermore, Ross has a tainted past, having invested heavily in and served as Vice Chair of the Bank of Cyprus; a bank known for its connections to Russian money laundering and oligarchs. There are indications that this has influenced some policies in the Commerce Department which do not serve the American people and are probably illegal.
ACTION: Call or email Representative Heck: Phone: 360-459-8514
Script: Congressman Heck, as a member of OI and I am looking forward to hearing about your plans for Congress and the pressing issues of the day: impeachment, climate change, immigration, etc. When and where can I expect the town hall to be so that we in the South Sound region can hear about your goals in Congress and plans to address these ongoing challenges in the future?
