Quote of the Week:"Democracy is the only system that persists in asking the powers that be whether they are the powers that ought to be."-- attributed to Sydney J. Harris The Last Week of Electoral Action! This is IT! It’s our very week to pitch in to protect the future of democracy. There is literally something impactful YOU can do every day this week except for Friday–take that day to catch your breath and then do something on the weekend. Seriously! Your help is vital. Pick from the list below and be a democracy protector. Pick. One.Thing. And do it!
OI just got 24 FREE Harris-Walz yard signs from the WSDCC (thank you, Maddie!). Check with Lisa for availability before stopping by the yard sign hub in SE Olympia. Federal Actions:Investigate Elon MuskPhoto Source: Wikimedia Commons US Northern Command Our August 18 Call to Action included an action asking our Members of Congress (MoC) to limit their activity on the X platform because he is tearing down democracy with his misinformation. New information has revealed that Elon Musk has been in regular contact with Putin and modified his Starlink satellite internet service to favor China over Taiwan. Musk also stopped funding the Starlink terminals for Ukraine and even restricted its military's use of Starlink. Background
Action: Copy the following script and Ask your MOC to investigate Elon Musk. Script: The Wall Street Journal reports that Elon Musk is collaborating with Putin and negotiating measures that undermine the US government’s foreign policy. Please investigate Musk’s efforts to endanger our national security. Protect Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s SafetyPhoto Source: Wikimedia Commons, Bakken / Dakota Access Oil Pipeline. Last week, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe filed a new lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers arguing that the Dakota Access Pipeline is operating illegally and must be shut down. The tribe argues the Army Corps flouted federal regulations by allowing the pipeline to operate without an easement, sufficient study of possible environmental impacts, or the necessary emergency spill response plans, among other alleged violations. The more than 1000-mile-long pipeline carries crude oil from the Bakken oil fields of northwest North Dakota to Illinois, and has been operating since 2017. Its pathway includes unceded land recognized as belonging to the Sioux Nation under an 1851 treaty with the U.S. government. The tribe has long opposed the pipeline, also referred to as DAPL, due to concerns that it violates the tribe’s sovereignty, endangers sacred cultural sites, and threatens to pollute the tribe’s water supply. Action: Copy the following script and Ask the Army Corps of Engineers to immediately release copies of its emergency response plan in case of a spill under Lake Oahe. Choose recipient “Dakota Access Pipeline”. Script: Hello, I’m contacting you from Washington State regarding the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s lawsuit alleging violations of federal regulations governing the Dakota Access Pipeline. Pipeline developer Energy Transfer has not shared with Standing Rock unredacted copies of its emergency response plans in the case of a spill under Lake Oahe. Please mandate the immediate release of these documents to ensure the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s welfare and sovereignty. Stop Asylum Seeker Abuse at Guantànamo Bay Photo Source: NARA & DVIDS Public Domain Archive - GetArchive Photographer: PH2 James Schoole Asylum seekers undertake dangerous journeys at sea in the hopes of reaching the safety of U.S. shores. But for those who are encountered at sea, those dreams of safety quickly turn into a nightmare when they are detained in horrific conditions at Guantánamo Bay. A new report titled Offshoring Human Rights: Detention of Refugees at Guantánamo Bay chronicles the concerning human rights abuses asylum seekers face at this infamous military base. Asylum seekers have been denied access to attorneys and threatened with punishment if they dared to complain about their treatment at Guantánamo on phone calls. Families with children have been confined in these conditions for over a year without access to appropriate education, medical care, or mental health support. The inhumane treatment of asylum seekers detained at Guantánamo is particularly concerning in light of reporting that the Biden Administration has considered expanding the use of Guantánamo to detain Haitian refugees. Action: Sign the Refugee Rights petition urging the Biden administration to close the Guantánamo Migration Operations Center and process asylum seekers at sea according to our nation’s human rights obligations.
